Wolves 0 Sunderland 0 – player ratings
Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers rates the players after a 0-0 stalemate against Sunderland.
John Ruddy
After having the night off at Blues on Monday he was 100 per cent busier here, having all of one save to make, specifically a comfortable block from Lewis Grabban's speculative effort. Did well to keep a couple of first half corners out from under his own crossbar but in the last 30 minutes he was a virtual spectator. 6/10
Ryan Bennett
Again, not a huge amount to do but he kept it error-free. 6/10
Conor Coady
His role was mostly about moving the ball around as briskly as possible, which he generally did with the minimum of fuss. One lovely moment in the first half when he effortlessly sauntered past a Sunderland attacker when under pressure. 6/10
Willy Boly
His occasionally over-casual nature put his team in trouble once in the second half but other he played on the front foot, especially in the last half an hour. 6/10
Matt Doherty
Like most of his team mates there was no lack of effort but his end product just wasn't there. On a couple of occasions he was in a good position on the right of the box but failed to deliver. 6/10
Romain Saiss
Protected the back three but didn't offer much in terms of creativity or impetus going forward, which is why he was replaced for Alfred N'Diaye with 22 minutes to go. 6/10
Ruben Neves
A class act. Controlled the tempo and produced a variety of passes to try and unpick the Sunderland back line. A chest and volley out to Doherty was befitting of a grander stage. With the Black Cats sitting so deep Neves was able to venture further forward than normal and it felt like he had more shots than during the rest of his Wolves appearances combined. Sadly, though, almost every single one was way off target, which for a player of Neves' technique and skill was disappointing. But other than his finishing he was excellent. 8/10
Barry Douglas
The fans sang his name at length in the first half, which was great to hear. Douglas responded with a solid performance – metronomic with his passing and a decent few crosses and set pieces. 7/10
Ivan Cavaleiro
Wolves' most likely route for something special. He found more space than his two other forwards and was a wiling runner who tried to inject some flamboyance and flair into Wolves' generally flat performance. On another day he'd have provided a couple of assists but poor finishing from his team mates meant otherwise. 7/10
Leo Bonatini
Well below his recent standards. Badly fluffed arguably the best chance of the game when he sent a free 15-yard shot nearer to the corner flag just before half time. 5/10
Diogo Jota
Not himself. Was teed up by Neves for a decent chance which he badly skewed across the face of goal. It's a recurring theme now but he endured a kicking from the opposition – Marc Wilson cynically took him down with a reckless tackle that could have yielded a red card, while Lee Cattermole's second booking was a nasty challenge on the Portuguese man, who just keeps getting up but must be absolutely sick and tired of being targeted. 6/10
Substitutes
Alfred N'Diaye (for Saiss, 68)
Conceded possession with a couple of daft passes and didn't really add the surging runs into the box that Wolves needed from him. 6/10
Helder Costa (for Douglas, 75)
Menacingly cut inside on a couple of occasions but found too many Sunderland defenders in his way. 6/10
Subs not used: Norris, Batth, Price, Vinagre, Enobakhare
