Burton vs Wolves: Nigel Clough out to upset Nuno bandwagon
Winger Sean Scannell has called for Burton to ‘upset’ Wolves – as they too look to bounce back from their heavy midweek defeat to Villa.
The Brewers’ 4-0 loss at home to Steve Bruce’s men on Tuesday continued an inconsistent month that’s seen them beat Fulham, claim good away points at Norwich and QPR and suffer a 5-0 thrashing at high-flying Leeds.
Nigel Clough’s team sit 19th in the Championship with nine points from their opening 10 games and with survival by any means the very clear aim that represents a decent start to the campaign.
But after being swept aside by Villa in what was their heaviest home defeat since their unlikely promotion to the Championship last year, the Brewers will be keen to get back on track tomorrow and claim another scalp.
Huddersfield loanee Scannell, who has started the last three league games up front alongside Marvin Sordell, believes they’re capable of beating Nuno Espirito Santo’s team.
He said: “They have done well this season. But, with us, they are coming here, so we’ve got to do things that they won’t like.
“We have to upset them and go for it, like we can do.
“Like I have said, we’ll take the positives from the Villa game and it’s a fresh start on Saturday.
“People thought that Fulham would come here and do whatever – and we upset them. So we just have to see how it goes and hopefully we can take the points.”
Burton beat Wolves 2-1 in February, which heralded the start of a six-game losing streak under ex-boss Paul Lambert.
Clough would love a repeat scoreline.
He said of tomorrow's game: "It’s similar to Fulham; they are probably not quite as good at it as Fulham who have had the same manager for a couple of seasons now but it’s the same principle and they are technically very good.
"We have to be solid and organised and try and find a way to be a threat ourselves.”
He has concerns over defenders John Brayford and Ben Turner who both picked up hamstring injuries during the game.
"They are both very doubtful," Clough said. "But this is where the squad comes into play as other lads are going to get the opportunities they have been waiting a few weeks for.
"Matty Palmer has had a bruised foot that was troubling him before the Manchester United game and after playing in that game it flared up again. But we are hoping that he will be ready to be in the squad for tomorrow."
Wolves loanee Joe Mason won’t feature at the Pirelli Stadium as he is ineligible to face his parent club.
