Wolves 1 Millwall 0 – player ratings
Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers rates the players after the 1-0 win over Millwall.
John Ruddy
Another no-nonsense performance from the experienced keeper who, like so many of Wolves' new signings, has made an impressive start to life at Molineux. Just the two shots on target for Millwall and one drew a good save in injury time – Ruddy held on well when a spillage would have left a tap in. 7/10
Danny Batth
A recall to the side owing to Willy Boly's injury absence and Batth's excellent display ensured the big Frenchman wasn't missed. A couple of very important blocks from dangerous crosses, sniffed out danger when breaking from the back line to stop through balls and won plenty of headers. His distribution was sound too. A welcome return for the captain. 8/10
Conor Coady
Blossoming in this role. He often got Wolves on the move when bringing it out from the back and a couple of crossfield passes were magnificent. One to Doherty in the first half was particularly sublime – if it had been Neves a video would have gone viral on Twitter. 7/10
Roderick Miranda
After that Cardiff nightmare he's bounced back with two solid performances. Again, with Wolves enjoying so much possession his game was often about setting the tempo going forward. Let Morison slip for a free header in the second half but otherwise he did well. 7/10
Matt Doherty
Played as a winger for most of the match. Teed up Bonatini with a good low cross in the first half and if the Brazilian had returned the favour instead of shooting in the second half Doherty may have got on the scoresheet. In fact that's a recurring theme with the Irishman – his runs on the overlap go unnoticed. 7/10
Ruben Neves
Did exactly what you'd want him to in a game like this – moved the ball quickly and intelligently. 7/10
Romain Saiss
Much better than his last two performances. Also got forward to good effect and unleashed a right-footed shot that was top corner bound until the keeper pushed it over. Good persistence to forge a close range chance which was brilliantly blocked. As always with Saiss the challenge now is to produce this on a consistent basis. Which he'll have to do with N'Diaye breathing down his neck for a starting spot. 7/10
Ruben Vinagre
As with Batth and Boly, the young Monaco loanee ensured Barry Douglas wasn't missed. The rampaging Vinagre is a joy to watch in full flow. Fearless when gallivanting down the left and keeps the errors to a minimum – what's not to like? Link-up play was excellent. 8/10
Ben Marshall
A surprise inclusion but looked much fitter than he did against Southampton. Wolves' new style of play suits Marshall down to the ground, playing in between the lines with delicate passing moves. That's him all over and he did his fair share of defensive duties too, which may have been the reason he got the nod over Cavaleiro and Enobakhare. 7/10
Leo Bonatini
You can see exactly why Nuno has fielded him from the start in every league game so far (not that he's got much of a choice now) as Bonatini is an ideal focal point in this system. Links the play really well, good with his back to goal, hard-working and enthusiastic...but should score more goals. When offering that description in the press box yesterday a reply came 'it sounds like you're describing Jon Dadi Bodvarsson'. Could have had a hat-trick yesterday but his finishing either wasn't incisive enough or keeper Archer smartly denied him. 7/10
Diogo Jota
What a goal. As this is ‘Wolves 2.0’ we can perhaps expect to see strikes of a similar quality throughout the season, like with Ruben Neves’ at Hull. As Nuno said afterwards, this was a ‘moment of true beauty’. But even aside from that he was a menace to the Millwall defence with some sumptuous creative play. Setting himself up to be the star of the season at this rate. 8/10
Substitutes
Bright Enobakhare (for Marshall, 59)
Deja vu all over again with Bright who showed flashes of skill but made some poor decisions. 5/10
Alfred N'Diaye (for Neves, 77)
Only 13 minutes but showed good energy and popped up in both boxes. 6/10
Ivan Cavaleiro (for Jota, 87)
He'll be wondering what he has to do to be handed his first league start of the season. N/A
Subs not used: Norris, Deslandes, Price, Ronan.
