Steve Bruce's Aston Villa also received a home tie and will entertain fellow Championship rivals Middlesbrough.

Wolves earned their path into the next round following a stunning 2-0 win at Premier League outfit Southampton last night.

Goals from Danny Batth and Donovan Wilson saw Wolves reach the third round for the third successive season.

The surprise victory over the Saints was the first time Wolves had beaten a team from a higher division than them in an EFL Cup tie since edging then-Premier League side Coventry City 2-1 in November 1995 on their way to the quarter finals. Two-time winners Wolves haven't gone that far in the competition since.

Wolves and Bristol Rovers have only ever met on 13 occasions with the most recent coming in the 1992/93 season when the Pirates were in the second tier, with Wolves winning 5-1 at Molineux.

Tony Pulis fielded a very strong Albion side that easily disposed of Accrington Stanley, while Villa enjoyed a comfortable home win, beating Wigan 4-1 at Villa Park.

The Baggies will be hoping to cause an upset over Pep Guardiola's superstars after being well beaten in both league fixtures last season.

But Albion have a decent League Cup record against City, having won two of the previous four clashes.

Steve Bruce will be relishing the chance to square up against fellow promotion contenders Middlesbrough.

Villa were hot favourites to win the Championship a few weeks ago, but a poor start to the season has seen them drift out to 18/1 with the bookmakers.

Ties will be played week commencing September 18
