The 23-year-old Welshman will spend the season with the League One side, who are managed by former Wolves midfielder Paul Cook.

Evans has been training with the under-23s at Compton Park after new boss Nuno Espirito Santo decided he wasn't in his plans for the upcoming season.

Prince Oniangue and Andy Lonergan are in the same position and it's anticipated they'll leave the club soon.

Evans, who signed a three-and-a-half year contract in February, will now look to recreate the success of his 2015/16 loan spell with another League One side, Bradford City.

Evans said: "I'm delighted. It's taken a couple of weeks to get it sorted out.

"I knew I didn't have a future this year at Wolves so to join a big club like Wigan who's going to be pushing for promotion this season was a perfect opportunity for me.

"Different managers have different opinions. Under Paul Lambert I was playing quite a bit, then he gave me a new contract. But now they've got a new manager and he's got different ideas, which is fine.

"They told me soon enough so I had plenty of time to get something sorted.

"It hasn't been an ideal pre-season for me to be honest. I haven't played a minute yet. I need to get at fit as possible as quickly as possible."

Cook added: "Lee’s a classy player and somebody who has been playing at a good level for a number of years.

"We do have a number of players in midfield at the moment but I feel you can never be too strong in that department, especially over the course of a season in which we’re going to play over 50 games.

"I am sure once he’s settled in, Lee is the type of player the fans will really warm too."

Former team mates Michael Jacobs and Nathan Byrne also both play for Wigan.

Evans is the 10th departure from Molineux this summer, either on permanent or temporary deals.
