Wolves chasing Southampton striker Sam Gallagher
Wolves are bidding to sign Southampton striker Sam Gallagher on loan as their summer transfer business continues.
The 21-year-old has been on Wolves' radar for some time and it's understood they're hopeful of pipping several Championship rivals to bring him to Molineux.
Gallagher, 6ft 4in, spent last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers and scored 12 times in 46 appearances – including one against Wolves – in a team that was relegated to League One.
The England Under-20 international came through the youth ranks at Plymouth Argyle before making the switch to Southampton aged 16.
He signed a new four-year contract with the Saints earlier this month but is down the pecking order at St Mary's behind Charlie Austin, Manolo Gabbiadini, Shane Long and Nathan Redmond and looks set to be loaned out for the season.
His long-term future does appear to be with the Premier League club, however. Vice chairman Les Reed said of Gallagher when he penned his new deal: "The experience Sam gained last season at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship was invaluable, and it was clear to see the further improvement that he made in his game during that time. Not only did he score 12 goals but his general play was impressive and highlighted his capability.
"We believe he has many exciting years ahead of him and that this is the ideal place for him to realise the great deal of potential that he still possesses."
Wolves have already signed nine players this summer with Atletico Madrid winger Diogo Jota set to be the 10th when he completes a season-long loan move in the next 48 hours.
