Barry Douglas: Nuno's style convinced me to join Wolves

Barry Douglas says Nuno Espirito Santo's style of football convinced him to join Wolves – and he can't wait for the new season.

The Scot impressed during Wolves' tour of Austria, starting all three games after joining from Turkish side Konyaspor earlier this month.

The £1million signing looks set to play a key role this season in Nuno's new 3-4-3 formation.

And he believes that Wolves' technical-based style will suit the squad well.

"One of the big factors in me coming back (to the UK to join Wolves) was we were going to play football," Douglas told the Express & Star. "I'm maybe not your typical British full back, I'm more about playing with the ball.

"It suits me and if we keep playing that way I think it suits a lot of the guys because we've got technical players.

"You just need to look at the squad – the quality's there in abundance, even young guys coming through."

Douglas started all three games in Austria, one of four players to so do with Ivan Cavaleiro, Willy Boly and Matt Doherty.

While he's reading nothing into that, the 27-year-old is pleased to have got plenty of minutes under his belt.

"It's nice to play as much as possible just now and get the fitness up as I started a bit later than the boys," he added.

"The third game (a defeat to Jablonec) was difficult and a good test, probably not what we expected after the first two games but it shows you this is football.

"You want a good test – we'll probably take more from that game than we will the first two.

"Everyone wants to win, it's that competitive mentality, but it's about fitness and getting to know the guys more.

"I'm feeling good – every game is helping me and training is helping me.

"It's always difficult coming into a new team but to be fair the boys have been top class. There's been a lot of newcomers and the boys have taken to us well and helped us settle in.

"I think we're starting to understand each other and play some nice football."

Douglas is back with a British club for the first time since 2013, when he left Dundee United to join Polish side Lech Poznan.

While excited to be in the Championship with Wolves, after 18 months in Turkey he'll have to get used to wearing coats and hoodies again...

"They'll be getting taken out of the loft!" Douglas said. "My wife is in Turkey just now sorting that side of things as I had to get back to training asap.

"For me I'm still learning and getting to know the players and the coaching staff. It's a transition period but it's going the right way.

"There's lots to be excited about, I'm back in the UK again which will be a new challenge and a new style.

"A lot of my friends play in the Championship. I always keep an eye on it because it's a big league – it's a new challenge for myself and hopefully I can improve myself."
