Kortney Hause gave Paul Lambert's men a fifth-minute lead when he tapped home an Edwards flick-on.

Edwards doubled the lead when he nodded Connor Ronan's free kick past keeper Adam Davies.

The hosts were then reduced to 10 men when Alex Mowatt was sent off for a horror challenge on Jack Price.

Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom was sent to the stands as tempers flared in a feisty encounter, while Wolves were also denied what looked a clear penalty.

Edwards killed the Tykes off with 13 minutes to go, meaning Marc Roberts' late strike was a consolation as Wolves got revenge for Barnsley's 4-0 win earlier at Molineux last September.

Analysis

There was a school of thought that if Wolves could go to seventh-placed Barnsley and win, just 72 hours after Saturday's FA Cup triumph, it would be in its own way even more impressive than the Anfield victory.

Well, they did it. And they did it with room to spare, writes Tim Spiers at Oakwell.

Despite six changes to the XI - or perhaps because of it - Wolves took to their Oakwell task with as much commitment, desire, organisation and commitment as they had against Liverpool.

What a tribute that is to Paul Lambert.

You wonder where Wolves would be in the table if it was he who became Wolves boss on August 1, 2016. Lambert, after taking stock, eschewing big names and introducing fresh-faced youngsters (Connor Ronan starred at Oakwell), has completely transformed Wolves. They're playing like a top six side.

They attack with confidence, skill and pace. They defend with guts, resilience and common sense.

This was a game jam packed full of incidents and yes Wolves played against 10 men for an hour, but they were 2-0 up and in charge by that point.

They won this with something to spare. And coming on the back of Anfield against a team seventh in the Championship, that is quite a feat.

Whisper it quietly, something special could be happening in WV1.

With so many 'tired limbs and minds', in Lambert's words, from Saturday's Anfield heroics it was no surprise to see the boss ring the changes.

Richard Stearman, Lee Evans, George Saville, Andreas Weimann, Nouha Dicko and new £13million permanent signing Helder Costa, who all exerted so much energy at Anfield, dropped to the bench.

In came skipper Danny Batth, Jack Price, Bright Enobakhare, Joe Mason, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and teenager Connor Ronan for his second Wolves start.

The hosts were depleted after the recent sales of Conor Hourihane, James Bree and ex Wolves man Sam Winnall, but another former Wolves player Adam Hammill started on the wing.

In terms of a contrast to Saturday, it couldn't have been more stark. The packed house, big-game atmosphere and glamour of the FA Cup at Liverpool was swapped for a cold, damp, grim evening in Yorkshire where around 600 Wolves fans made the trek north - around 8,000 fewer than went to Anfield.

But any fears of Wolves being flat after Saturday were eradicated within five minutes.

Connor Ronan, on set piece duty for the evening, swung over a corner from the right - David Edwards flicked it on at the near post and it was tapped over the line by Kortney Hause for his second goal for the club.

It was a great start from a much-changed Wolves and they weren't far from doubling their lead when Edwards fired over a deflected shot on the turn.

Barnsley had an incredible 2016, winning promotion from League One and playing their way to a position of seventh in the Championship and they soon began to show why, albeit in patches.

Harry Burgoyne was called upon to make a superb reflex save from Alex Mowatt who was through on goal.

The impressive Marley Watkins headed onto the roof of the net and then fired across goal and just wide as the hosts piled on the pressure.

But Wolves continued to threaten at the other end and were inches away from making it 2-0 when Ronan took Enobakhare's pass and sidefooted against the post from 18 yards.

It wasn't long though before Lambert's confident team made it 2-0. Ronan was again the architect, curling over a free kick from the right and Edwards rose highest to bury a header in the corner.

Things were looking sweet for Wolves and they got even better before half time when debutant Mowatt saw red for a shocking, studs-up tackle into the diving Jack Price's body.

The home fans were absolutely livid - and their mood worsened when referee Chris Kavanagh gave Wolves a penalty for what looked like a clear foul on Enobakhare in the box. However, after a long consultation with his assistant the ref overturned the decision, to Wolves' anger and dismay, with a suggestion Bright had pulled Scowen back a second earlier.

Either way the referee was public enemy number one, with both sets of fans joining together to voice their displeasure with Mr Kavanagh.

And the fractious nature of the contest continued in the second half.

Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom was sent to the stands after a scuffle in the Wolves dugout, with the hosts trying to retrieve the ball back quickly.

Edwards then fouled Scowen and was absolutely livid with the assistant referee, who booked him despite the home fans shouting for a red.

A lack of goalmouth action, though, was suiting Wolves fine, with Barnsley restricted to only sporadic half chances.

In fact their first real chance of the half, with 13 minutes to go, led to them killing the game off. Enobakhare played nicely to Bodvarsson whose low shot was saved and then who else but Edwards fired home the rebound.

It was his ninth goal of an extremely productive season, equalling his career best.

Barnsley pulled one back through MacDonald but it was immaterial.

Wolves coasted home for a deeply impressive victory.
