Nottm Forest 0 Wolves 2 - player ratings

Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers rates the players after a much-needed 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

Published

Carl Ikeme

Harry Burgoyne did a very decent job deputising for Ikeme but it was good to have the Nigerian international back. Wolves looked more solid as a result. Just one blip when he dropped a corner, before reclaiming it at the second attempt. His distribution was speedy and he claimed every cross going. 7/10

Conor Coady

Not a surprise to see Dominic Iorfa dropped, who had become a liability of late. Coady stepped in with a very able performance. Beaten by Mustapha Carayol a couple of times but otherwise he was a reassuring presence and did nothing silly. Potential for this to become his position. 7/10

Danny Batth

A fairly non-eventful afternoon for Batth's 250th career game and after recent weeks that was no bad thing. Distribution not the best but he did all that was asked of him. 7/10

Richard Stearman

Finally getting regular games again and Wolves look a meaner defensive outfit as a result. He's enjoying reacquainting his partnership with Batth. And a second-half stepover when bringing the ball out of defensive was classic Stearman! 7/10

Matt Doherty

Looked like the Doherty of last season at times - comfortable in defence and adventurous in attack. Set up a couple of chances and linked nicely with Cavaleiro. 7/10

David Edwards

A return to form after a sluggish performance in midweek. Edwards was key to Wolves' game plan - Lambert wanted them to press with intensity and win the ball back high up the field. Edwards duly excelled, winning a succession of tackles particularly in the second half, one of which led to the second goal. Also played in Nouha Dicko for a great late chance and gave protection to the back four. 8/10

Jack Price

As Wolves fans have a tendency to say, Price = points. Lambert utilised the system that got Wolves a dogged point at Preston in his first game and it was therefore no surprise to see Price recalled. Wolves always look a better side when Price is playing. He performed with intelligence and composure, sniffing out danger and recycling the ball with minimal fuss. Becoming a leader too. Must get a run in the team now. 8/10

Helder Costa

Where would Wolves be without this guy? His sixth goal of the season was the one that won Wolves this game - if they'd gone it 0-0 at half time it may have been a very different second half. A real moment of magic, scoring from an impossibly tight angle and displaying superb footwork and technique. Played his part in Cavaleiro's goal too. Wasn't at his very best, yet still played a pivotal role. 8/10

Bright Enobakhare

Another who was key to Wolves' tactics. He got the ball and ran at Forest's defence, stretching play and occupying defenders in a manner that Edwards doesn't when playing in the '10' role. Offers Wolves something different, something exciting. A few promising touches and dribbles, especially when almost winning a penalty in the second half. Like Price, he must start on Boxing Day. 7/10

Ivan Cavaleiro

As Lambert said afterwards, Cavaleiro is now 'stepping things up'. Looks like he's enjoying himself and is starting to make important contributions. Great to see him, Costa, Enobakhare and Dicko all running at Forest with positive intent. A little selfish at times, usually to Dicko's frustration, but the run of games has benefitted him and it feels there's plenty more to come yet. Took his goal well and could have had another. 7/10

Nouha Dicko

The icing on the cake would have been a goal from Dicko but he spurned his late chance. Still, he was better than in recent weeks and played his part in forcing several mistakes from Forest's defenders. 7/10

Substitutes

Romain Saiss (for Enobakhare, 69)

Added protection to the back four as Lambert looked to shore things up. Will be interesting to see whether he's back in the team on Boxing Day. 6/10

Connor Ronan (for Costa, 81)

The first of what will surely be many appearances in a Wolves shirt for this gifted youngster. Great to see him thrown on and this wasn't a token appearance either. Too late to make an impact though. N/A

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson (for Dicko, 83)

Again, too late to make an impact. N/A

Subs not used: Burgoyne, Iorfa, Hause, Saville.
