QPR 1 Wolves 2 - player ratings

Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers rates the players after the 2-1 win over QPR at Loftus Road.

Published

Carl Ikeme

Back in the team after a few weeks out. Doesn't get a great mark purely because he had very little to do. QPR's main attacking exploits came after he'd left the field. Withdrawn with an achilles problem eight minutes from time. 6/10

Dominic Iorfa

Much improved on recent weeks. He looked completely devoid of confidence against Sheffield Wednesday but played his part in a solid defensive rearguard for the most part here. A pleasure to see him gallivant to the byline and tee up David Edwards' opening goal. We've barely seen anything of note in an attacking sense from Iorfa this season. Hopefully he kicks on from here. 7/10

Danny Batth

Perhaps missing the Wednesday game through suspension did him good as Batth looked somewhere back to his best. Made a magnificent block with his head to deny Grant Hall early on. Revelled in the backs-to-the-wall muck and nettles defending of those torturous nine minutes of injury time. Threw his body at the ball on a few occasions. 8/10

Richard Stearman

Formed his old partnership with Batth and the pair worked well together. Like Batth, Stearman enjoyed those final minutes and put his body on the line for his team. Shame he misses Wolves' next game against his parent club Fulham as the back four needs settling down and Stearman should surely be part of it. 7/10

Matt Doherty

Great to see him bombing forward in the second half. In fact it wasn't at all clear where he was playing - he popped up on the right of the box to beautifully slide in Iorfa in the lead-up to Edwards' goal, then a few minutes later strode through the middle like a centre forward only to see his shot saved by the excellent Alex Smithies. 7/10

Conor Coady

Started the game well, pinging a couple of superb passes to Cavaleiro and Costa, but he faded in the second half and wasn't as effective as his fellow central midfielders. 6/10

Romain Saiss

A class act in front of the back four. Broke up play and produced quality in possession. Wolves looked far more assured with him in the side. Picked up his fifth booking of the season but the FA cut-off point was last week so he avoids a suspension. Faded in the final knockings but understandable as he hasn't featured much of late. 7/10

David Edwards

When the chips are down, this guy delivers. Edwards was verbally abused by a handful of fans on Saturday when trying to applaud them at full time and then couldn't even tweet about his new charity foundation without getting some stick this week. But he never goes hiding - and there he was smashing a sweetly-struck shot into the corner to break the deadlock. His fourth goal in eight games, all on live television, and it had the away end singing his name. Could have had a couple more too - got in excellent positions for two headers but sent the first just over and for the second Smithies denied him. A leader. 8/10

Helder Costa

Wolves should make the most of him while they can because there's surely little prospect of them signing Costa permanently. Why would Benfica want to sell him when he scores goals like that? Nothing seemed on when he picked the ball up on the touchline, but five seconds later he'd led three players on a merry dance and put the ball in the net. On another day he'd have had two assists - put a cross on Edwards' head in the first half and, when he was excelling as Wolves' 'out' on the counter attack late on, he teed up Doherty. 8/10

Nouha Dicko

No shortage of running but he was left isolated for long spells of the game. Never looks completely comfortable when up front on his own. Not his natural game. 6/10

Ivan Cavaleiro

Earned his start with a couple of promising substitute appearances. One great cross for Costa early in the first half but otherwise it wasn't his night. Ran at QPR and stretched play but he infuriatingly wandered offside on a number of occasions and had little end product. That can't be the case if he's not going to put in a big shift in terms of helping his full back, which clearly isn't his forte. Has plenty to learn if he's to be a success in the Championship. 5/10

Substitutes

George Saville (for Cavaleiro, 72)

Struggled to keep up with the pace of the game, which was end to end when he entered the fray. 5/10

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson (for Dicko, 76)

Nearly scored one of the goals of the season when he Cruyff-turned Lynch and hared into the box before Smithies saved his shot. That was the Bodvarsson of the start of the campaign. More of that, please. 6/10

Andy Lonergan (for Ikeme, 82)

Hesitated for QPR's goal - started to come from his line, then stayed rooted, leaving Batth isolated against two players. 5/10

Subs not used: Hause, Price, Wallace, Enobakhare.
