Wolves 2 Derby 3 - player ratings

Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers rates the players after the 3-2 defeat at home to Derby.

Published

Andy Lonergan

Played his part in the opening goal, firstly with a poor kick and then secondly when he palmed Hughes' header into Ince's path, although it's perhaps a little harsh to criticise him. But thereafter he was excellent. Made two superb saves in particular, tipping shots from Butterfield and Vydra onto the post. Would have been a heavier defeat were it not for him. 8/10

Matt Doherty

The pick of Wolves' back four. But that's not exactly a compliment. Too standoffish and his distribution was poor. Improved as the game went on and helped get Wolves going when he seized the initiative to set up the Cavaleiro chance. As seems to happens in more games than not, he was throwing himself forward in injury time. 6/10

Dominic Iorfa

A surprise to see Kortney Hause dropped and Iorfa didn't stake a claim for permanent inclusion. Slow and ponderous and played as big a role as anyone in Wolves' catastrophic first-half defensive performance. He stood as watched as Hughes lobbed the ball to Bent for the second. Seemed distracted. His pace got him out of trouble a couple of times and he wasn't much better after the break. 3/10

Danny Batth

Not half as bad as the fans who shamefully and crassly booed him made out to be. But as skipper and the senior defender, he has to take responsibility for the back four being so disorganised. Distribution was better than in recent weeks. The fact he applauded the supporters who had booed him at full time showed the character of the man. Going through a bad run of form and needs the support of everyone at the club he loves more than ever. For an academy graduate, local lad and club captain who gives 100 per cent every time he takes to the field, that support should be mandatory. Those who booed him should be ashamed. 5/10

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson

His inexperience was there for all to see in the first half. Like Doherty, he doesn't close his winger down quickly enough or stop crosses coming in. Technique on the ball and going forward is fine. But he needs to get the defensive basics right if he's to command a place in the side. 5/10

David Edwards

The only player who came away from the first half with any credit. Like Batth, he never goes hiding. Won numerous tackles and interceptions. In great form in recent weeks and he popped up with his third goal in six matches. His leadership skills have come on tenfold and his passion for the club is there for all to see. 8/10

Conor Coady

Went missing in the first half and didn't offer enough protection to the back four. Struggled to contain the excellent Will Hughes. Great crossfield pass that led to Costa's goal but other than that he was well below his best. 5/10

Joao Teixeira

Oh dear. Floated around midfield offering nothing in terms of defensive workload. An individual in a team. Withdrawn after half an hour. 2/10

Helder Costa

Produced Wolves' only effort of note in the first half, which he created himself. His direct and pacey approach means he'll always create an opportunity. Smart finish for his goal, which made him top scorer this season on four. But otherwise he didn't hit the heights of recent weeks. 6/10

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson

Similar to last week he looked half a yard off the pace. The fact he's been Wolves' battering ram for three months now - coming so soon after his Iceland exertions at Euro 2016 and a full season in 2015/16 - is taking its toll. Great work for Costa's goal. Needs a break. But the service to him was appalling. 5/10

Ivan Cavaleiro

His fourth start for Wolves and his best performance. Offered nothing in the way of defensive protection in that first half, but with Wolves on the front foot in the second half he came alive. Unlucky not to score when his shot was cleared off the line. Superb cross for Edwards' late header. A run of starts and we should finally start to see him justify that £7m fee. 7/10

Substitutes

George Saville (for Teixeira, 32)

Brought on to try and steady the midfield ship. Kept things simple and held his position. A silly booking just a minute after coming on. 6/10

Nouha Dicko (for Bodvarsson, 66)

Produced a bit of impetus when taking players on. A goal would do him the world of good but he's barely had a sniff at goal in his last couple of appearances. 6/10

Jed Wallace (for Coady, 89)

No time to make an impact. N/A

Subs not used: Flatt, Silvio, Stearman, Saiss.
