Newcastle 0 Wolves 2 - player ratings

Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers hands out some high marks after a remarkable 2-0 win at Newcastle United.

Published

Carl Ikeme

What a different afternoon it could have been had Ikeme not pulled off a stunning save with the score at 0-0 to deny Perez. He was initially wrong-footed and also partially unsighted by Doherty, but got down low to his left with a strong hand. Also denied Mitrovic when he came off his line to block in the second half. 8/10

Matt Doherty

His best game at right back in a while. Came in for some rough treatment at times but handled it well and defended with composure. On another day he'd have had a goal and an assist - he was lurking behind Mbemba when the Newcastle man put through his own net, and then he brilliantly wandered forward to tee up Bodvarsson for a late chance. 8/10

Dominic Iorfa

Moved inside from right back and, like Doherty, you'd struggle to recall when he last played so well in this position. Had been jittery at centre half in the opening games of the season but he looked very comfortable here. Won countless headers. 8/10

Danny Batth

A proper captain's performance. Admitted the players were angry after Tuesday's 4-0 defeat to Barnsley and that they wanted to prove their character. In that regard he led from the front. A classic Batth rearguard action - dogged defending, blocks, clearances, tough tackles, the lot. 9/10

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson

He looks like some player. The fact Matt Ritchie was substituted after 63 minutes tells its own story. Displays excellent technique but also defensive nous, particularly for someone so young. 8/10

David Edwards

By his own admittance he's been off the pace so far this season. Returned to form in some style here. Did an excellent job of helping to keep danger-man Jonjo Shelvey quiet, restricting him to pot shots from range. Protected the back four and played with real heart. Managed his energy levels better too - he rarely ventured forward and he looked sharper for it. Won the ball back for Costa's goal. 9/10

Romain Saiss

The man who models his game on Sergio Busquets did a pretty decent impersonation. What a debut. Shielded the centre halves with discipline, tenacity and physicality. Constantly broke up play, but also started it for Wolves too with some sensible passing. Showed good technique when he curled a 25-yard free kick towards the corner. Needed absolutely no invitation to put his foot in. Exactly the player this Wolves team needs. 9/10

Prince Oniangue

Bought into the game plan and did his fair share of work in closing Newcastle down and allowing their midfielders no space or freedom. Certainly got an engine on him - this was his third game in a week but he showed no signs of fatigue. 7/10

Helder Costa

So many contenders for man of the match but this guy just about shades it. First off he showed a quite tremendous work ethic and bombed up and down that right flank, non-stop. That was impressive enough but he was also Wolves' best creative outlet and frightened the life out of Newcastle's defenders when he ran at them. Very direct and so quick. Could have scored in the first half and then found the net with a beauty of a curler to seal victory. 9/10

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson

Led the line superbly. Hassled the Newcastle centre halves and pressed them high up the pitch from goal kicks. It was his cross that was turned in by Mbemba for the opener. And he was inches away from scoring himself when he smacked an early shot against the bar. Also whistled one just over with a sharp spin and shot late on. Considering the chances he's getting he'll want to be scoring more. 8/10

Joao Teixeira

Like Costa, he ran all day long and helped ensure Newcastle had to time on the ball. Didn't have the end product that his Portuguese team mate produced though. But he does look more at home on the wing that in a central midfield trio. 7/10

Substitutes

Ivan Cavaleiro (for Teixeira, 71)

A bright cameo. Produced a couple of decent efforts at goal and kept the Newcastle defenders honest. 7/10

Joe Mason (for Costa, 74)

Replaced the tiring Costa. Did little of note. 6/10

Conor Coady (for Bodvarsson, 88)

On for just a few minutes as Wolves closed out the game. N/A

Subs not used: Lonergan, Hause, Saville, Gladon.
