Sheffield Wednesday 4 Wolves 1 - Report and pictures
[gallery] Wolves were trounced at Hillsborough as a Fernando Forestieri-inspired Sheffield Wednesday won 4-1 - heaping pressure on Kenny Jackett.
Benik Afobe gave Wolves an early lead from the spot - but 10 minutes later they were behind, and never looked like restoring parity.
Forestieri equalised on 20 minutes - four minutes after Afobe's opener, with another penalty after a combination of Danny Batth and Ethan Ebanks-Landell were harshly judged to have brought down Lucas Joao.
The same man then fired Wednesday in front on the volley, and in the second half Daniel Pudil and Gary Hooper scored the goals Wednesday's dominance merited.
Wolves looked bright in stages going forward, but it was another defensive capitulation that cost them, as it had against Leeds on Thursday.
They never really coped with the physical presence of Joao or the pace and trickery of livewire Forestieri.
Coming so soon after another bitterly disappointing defeat, and combined with Wolves' league position of 17th, nowhere near the play-offs, serious questions will be asked of Jackett's position.
The Wolves boss made two changes from the side that lost 3-2 to Leeds, dropping Scott Golbourne and David Edwards.
Doherty came in at left back and Nathan Byrne replaced Edwards, with James Henry moving inside to play behind Afobe.
As so often this season Wolves made a bright start to the game
Playing a high pressing game they made life difficult for the sheepish Wednesday defenders, and one such incident saw Henry win the ball just outside the home box and play to Jordan Graham who was in on goal before a heavy touch took the ball away.
And Henry, clearly enjoying his free role behind Afobe, then did the same again just a few minutes later before sending an audacious chip just over Keiren Westwood's crossbar.
Graham sent an excellent cross into the box which just evaded Byrne, and then Wolves deservedly took the lead 16 minutes in.
Doherty took the ball off Graham's toes, barged into the area and was taken out for a clear spot kick. Up stepped Afobe, once of Wednesday on loan, to send Westwood the wrong way with a very cool penalty.
Wolves were on top but it was, unsurprisingly, defensive errors which were soon to be their undoing.
Lucas Joao powered in between Danny Batth and Ethan Ebanks-Landell and went down - the challenge certainly started outside the box but Joao went down just inside, and referee Mark Brown awarded his second penalty in five minutes.
Forestieri duly converted, with Ikeme going the right way but unable to get there,
Then on 26 minutes, just 10 minutes after taking the lead, Wolves were behind.
A right-wing cross was headed by Batth, under pressure from Joao, straight to Forestieri who lashed home a 12-yard volley via a deflection.
Wednesday were firmly on top and Wolves' fragile defence was struggling to cope, particularly with the physical Joao.
Batth blocked another Forestieri shot and then Ebanks-Landell had to bail out Ikeme after the keeper spilled a free kick.
From nowhere Wolves could have equalised when Graham whipped a perfect right-footed cross from right on the left touchline, but Byrne headed over.
Back came Wednesday who somehow failed to make it 3-1. Joao brushed Batth aside to run through on goal - Ikeme blocked his shot, then foiled Forestieri's rebound, before Wallace lashed over the bar with just Wolves defenders on the goalline.
There was yet more drama in stoppage time at the end of the half. When tackling a Wednesday man Ebanks-Landell was very harshly deemed to have sent a back-pass to Ikeme. The Wolves wall blocked the six-yard free kick and the ball came out to Joao, whose shot was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Ikeme.
Wolves came out on the attack at the start of the second half. Byrne, on the left flank, cut inside and crossed towards the unmarked Afobe, with the ball skimming off his head.
The next goal was crucial and it was Wednesday who scored it - a cross was cut out by Doherty and the ball dropped to Pudil who had time to pick his spot from 18 yards.
Grant Holt was sent on for his first appearance since Bristol City away in early November, replacing Byrne as Jackett went 4-4-2.
But it made no difference to the pattern of play, with Wednesday still looking the more likely scorers against a ragged Wolves back line.
Ikeme raced from his box but couldn't clear and Wednesday won a throw - they quickly took it and Ikeme had to turn and face outside his own box, but fortunately for him and Wolves Forestieri curled over from 25 yards.
Barry Bannan curled over and that man Forestieri crashed one over from the edge of the box, when completely unmarked, as Wolves struggled to keep the score down, yet alone mount a comeback.
They came close to pulling one back when a Graham corner caused havoc in the Wednesday box and Iorfa nodded over keeper Westwood, only for Jack Hunt to hook clear from the goalline.
Time was running out but Wolves couldn't muster a meaningful charge in the final 10 minutes, with Wednesday confidently spraying the ball around.
And Wednesday duly added deserved gloss to the scoreline in the last minute when substitute Atdhe Nuhiu outmuscled McDonald in midfield and played to Hooper who clipped past Ikeme.
