Wolves 0 Brentford 2 - player ratings

We rate how the Wolves players performed on a miserable night at Molineux.

Published
EMILIANO MARTINEZ

Blameless for both goals. The first took a big deflection and for the second he was left abandoned by his defenders as Phillip Hofmann ran through on goal. Had made an excellent stop from the same player just seconds earlier. A couple of jittery moments, though, with one shot bouncing off him, and another leading to a heart-in-mouth moment when he needed two attempts to claim the ball. 6/10

DOMINIC IORFA

Galvanised the team in the second half with some enterprising attacking down the right flank, but defensively he was poor and lacking in confidence. Like so many of his team mates he is underperforming at the moment. Was needlessly booked for a daft second half challenge with the ball heading out of play. That booking means he is suspended for Saturday's visit of Middlesbrough and leaves Wolves with four available senior defenders. 6/10

DANNY BATTH

Not a performance the captain will be proud of. Struggled at times against the lively Marco Djuricin and his distribution, like so many of his team mates, was desperately poor. Easily beaten in the air as the ball was flicked on for Brentford's second goal. 5/10

KORTNEY HAUSE

All at sea for Brentford's opener when he was caught dawdling, allowing Alan Judge to chip over his head into the Wolves box, finding Djuricin who volleyed home via a deflection. Again, very poor playing the ball out from the back. At 20 he is learning on the job and clearly has huge potential, but with Wolves so short of cover Kenny Jackett can't take him out of the firing line. 4/10

SCOTT GOLBOURNE

Is slowly rediscovering his form and has looked pretty solid in the last two matches, despite Wolves' collective defensive woes. Bombed forward to good effect at times, particularly when getting to the byline and creating a decent opportunity for Adam Le Fondre with Wolves chasing an equaliser. 7/10

JAMES HENRY

Has been Wolves' best player this season but he was well below par. Apart from one excellent first half cross he offered very little. Could have no complaints when he was substituted early in the second half. Wolves sorely missed his creativity, as no one else offered any either 4/10

CONOR COADY

Handed the opportunity he craved after not starting any of the last five matches. He didn't take his chance. Looks a patch on the player who started the season with such dynamism. Wasteful in possession and showed none of the rousing tough-tackling which his early-season performances were full of. Perhaps the Brighton red card was on his mind. Work rate and desire cannot be questioned but he needs to be much more influential to justify his place in the team. 4/10

KEVIN MCDONALD

Never seems to look as comfortable without Jack Price by his side. A recurring theme here but he also gave the ball away with alarming regularity, which was such a feature of the team's woeful performance. Needs to rediscover his match-winning form of just a few weeks ago as Wolves just aren't the same team otherwise. 5/10

SHEYI OJO

Another start and another missed opportunity for Ojo. Is perpetually playing well from the bench and then poorly when he starts the next game. His age and inexperience are factors, clearly, but Ojo has the talent, the application and the attributes needed at this level, so why can't he show it when he plays from the start? One decent run and shot in the first half but otherwise ineffective, and was substituted shortly after the break. 5/10

BENIK AFOBE

It was both heartening and dispiriting to see Afobe race back into his own penalty area to clear Wolves' lines from one first-half Brentford attack. Heartening because it showed the commitment and desire that Afobe has in spades, dispiriting because it was another example of him not playing where he is at his most potent - i.e. as a proper striker. Was guilty, if that's the right word, of trying too much, popping up here, there and everywhere in a bid to get Wolves moving. Was at his best with a couple of searing first half runs, but wasted the best chance of the night when he volleyed over from close range. Played on the right wing for most of the second half as Jackett went 4-3-3. This should never happen again. 7/10

ADAM LE FONDRE

A frustrating night for the on-loan Cardiff striker. Spurned a decent second half opportunity from Golbourne's cross, although it was at a tight angle. An endless succession of long balls were lumped up towards him and, understandably for his height, they generally didn't stick. A baffling tactic. Starved of service and struggled to make an impact on the game. 5/10

SUBSTITUTES

JACK PRICE (FOR SHEYI OJO, 53)

A surprise to see him dropped after his recent good form. Not at his best but kept things ticking along as Wolves steadily improved as the second half wore on. 6/10

RAJIV VAN LA PARRA (FOR JAMES HENRY, 53)

Preferred to Jed Wallace and Nathan Byrne as Jackett changed formation with a double substitution. Full of running and had one decent long-range shot. Was generally a positive influence but, like Price, had little support from those around him. 7/10

MATT DOHERTY (FOR DOMINIC IORFA, 78)

Allowed the ball to bounce past him from the flick-on which led to Brentford's second goal, jogging slowly back with his arm raised appealing for offside. Not his finest hour. 3/10
