Boss Kenny Jackett expressed his delight at breaking his Wolves League Cup duck - but demanded his team improve their poor starts to games.

The Wolves boss also said match-winner Benik Afobe 'relished' being made captain for the first time.

For the second game in succession Wolves began the match slugglishly and League Two side Newport County took advantage to score a shock early opener.

Goals from Nouha Dicko and Afobe from the penalty spot turned the game around as Wolves reached the second round for the first time since 2012, after crashing out to Northampton Town and Morecambe in the past two seasons.

"I'm delighted to get through," Jackett said.

"Our record, or my record, at Wolves in this competition's been poor so I'm very pleased to win.

"Newport battled well and played well. It's a competition we want to progress in."

Of Wolves' slow start, in which Scott Boden opened the scoring after six minutes, Jackett said Wolves needed to play with more purpose.

"It's been a bad habit, we have to sort that out and play with more purpose," he said.

"I don't just mean the goal against us, we started with possession and we didn't have enough purpose - what is our game plan, what are we doing?

"We looked nervous on the ball. Our start has been poor in both games and we need to address that.

"I'm pleased to say we recovered from it but in possession we need more of a plan in terms of where we're going."

Afobe was handed the armband in the absence of Richard Stearman and Danny Batth.

"I felt Benik was a good choice as captain," Jackett said. "He relished it and he was proud to be captain of Wolves."

Loan signings Emiliano Martinez, Sheyi Ojo and Adam le Fondre all made their Molineux debuts, the latter from the bench as Jackett selected a strong XI.

Ojo stood out, setting up Dicko's opener in a busy performance.

Jackett said of the Liverpool player: "I thought he played very well, for 18 he showed a lot of power and pace and it'll be really interesting to see how he progresses now, there's a lot of ability there."

Irishman Matt Doherty was a surprise choice for the right mdifield berth and Jackett said he played the 22-year-old to reward him for some sparkling pre-season form.

The Wolves boss added: "He's had an excellent pre-season, Matt, and it's been a frustrating time for him because as well as he's done Dominic Iorfa's got the shirt, so to get him some game time.

"I tried the pair on them up and down the right, I don't think it was the most productive, we lacked crosses, until Rajiv van La Parra came on and then I did think Rajiv showed good imagination and good play, and looked a threat down that right hand side.

"There's been some frustration for Matt because he hasn't done a lot wrong but has seen the emergence of Iorfa curtail his minutes on the pitch."
