Wolves are hopeful of keeping Bakary Sako
Wolves boss Kenny Jackett today insisted the solution to their defensive woes lies within - as he declared he's hopeful of keeping Bakary Sako.
Richard Stearman was at fault in the build-up to both Wigan goals in Saturday's 2-2 draw as Wolves made it eight against in three games after conceding just three in the first eight.
But the head coach is confident they can use the two-week break to iron out the defensive problems which have led to an air of uncertainty in the back line in the last three outings.
"It's been a strength of ours previously and we know where we need to improve and we have the players to do it," said Jackett.
"We've been solid and we have something to base our season on now into the winter. You can't expect to get too many points when you're conceding as we have.
"But there are aspects of our play, our quality and spirit, which are very good. We need to base ourselves on the good things we're doing and eradicate the mistakes."
As Jackett reflected on his defence, man-of-the-match Bakary Sako thrust himself into the spotlight with Wolves' second goal to make it two in a week and five for the season.
The 26-year-old winger is out of contract at the end of the season and unless Wolves get promoted, his £25,000-a-week wages will be prohibitive.
But Jackett believes Wolves can keep him, adding: "Yes we're hopeful. He's very happy here. As the club keeps improving and competing at the top half of this league this will help us."
Jackett insists Wolves can't afford to be concerned about any interest in the Mali international.
"That's the case with any player," he said. "Gareth Bale got bought by Real Madrid – there's always somebody that can do well enough for the next set of clubs to try to take them."
The draw kept Wolves in seventh but they are still only two points off leaders Norwich.
And Jackett praised his side's spirit after they bounced back following Wednesday's 3-1 home defeat by Huddersfield and came from 2-1 down.
"We were better on Saturday – we came roaring back," he said. "If you want to be successful you have to do that."
Meanwhile, Nouha Dicko limped off with cramp and not an injury on Saturday.
