Wolves ready for new Leigh Griffiths bid

Celtic were today preparing to step up their interest in Wolves' 13-goal top scorer Leigh Griffiths as the Molineux men continue to chase Leon Clarke.

It's understood further contact has been made between Wolves and the Parkhead giants amid talk of a cash bid from the Hoops for the 23-year-old Scotland international.

Wolves have turned down a loan approach from Celtic but it appears they are open to permanent offers for the striker.

After starting just two of the previous six games, Griffiths was again left on the sidelines on Saturday when he was an unused substitute in the 3-1 win against Bristol City.

That was the first time this season Griffiths has failed to appear in the league this season.

This came just hours after Celtic boss Neil Lennon admitted the forward was "highly thought of".

Meanwhile, Wolves are set to increase their bid for Clarke, who has apparently expressed his disappointment at a dragging of heels after speculation that two Molineux bids have been rejected by the Sky Blues.

"There's been a lot of transfer speculation about Leigh but I've heard no information of any bid for him, and likewise we haven't put in any fresh bids for anyone," maintained head coach Kenny Jackett.

"Leigh was part of a squad chasing the top two - I'm sure Jez (Moxey, chief executive) has been handling all that.

"Leigh's a Wolves player who's part of a group which got a good win on Saturday.

"But if it (bid) is true we'll let our fans know."

Jackett insisted the decision to omit Griffiths was tactical as he preferred new signing Nouha Dicko alone up front, the French striker scoring the first goal and assisting in Derrick Williams's deflected own goal for the second.

"Leigh missed out because of the competition, and to a degree, formation because Lee Evans and Dave Edwards have broken very well from midfield in recent weeks and given us another dimension going forward," said Jackett.

"Recently we've been playing with one recognised striker and the likes of (substitute) Bakary Sako on Saturday, James Henry and Michael Jacobs cutting in from the wing which has just slightly altered our formation for the better.

"Now they need to look forward to Oldham tomorrow very quickly because they had a great win."
