Wolves today flattened speculation they are considering signing Birmingham City captain Stephen Carr.

The former Tottenham and Newcastle right-back, who turns 36 in August and is out-of-contract in four days' time, has been linked with Wolves and Burnley in the last 24 hours with his future up in the air.

Carr, who skippered Blues to their 2011 Carling Cup triumph, is well- known to Wolves' scouting network after winning 44 caps for Ireland, many of them under former boss Mick McCarthy.

But they are looking to recruit players who fit the 'young and hungry' profile.

Wolves dismissed the talk with a weary sigh of frustration as they see themselves being used to find a player a new club.

Chief executive Jez Moxey said: "It's not true – there's no interest from us in signing Stephen Carr."

Wolves are not even targeting a right-back this summer as they already have plenty of competition in that department on the books.

Kevin Foley and Ronald Zubar are set to contest the right-back berth next season and Matt Doherty is one for the future, while Richard Stearman can also play there.

New boss Stale Solbakken is eyeing centre-backs to improve Wolves' problem defence.

But he may have to sell players first to fund any strengthening there after landing three new signings last week – Bjorn Bergmann Siguardarson, Frank Nouble and Jamie Tank.

Roger Johnson remains available but without any takers, while Christophe Berra has a year left on his contract.

Jody Craddock is out of contract but has a two-week trial to earn a new deal starting next week.

In addition, Danny Batth is looking to make this his breakthrough season at Wolves.

Meanwhile, freed Wolves striker James Spray has held talks about a move to League Two side Plymouth.

But fellow released forward Ashley Hemmings has rejected a switch to League Two club Rotherham after failing to agree personal terms.
