'Throw surprises at you' - why West Brom's James Morrison is not getting carried away
Albion head coach will not get carried away with work left to do.
Albion boss James Morrison will not count his chickens in the rush for Championship safety as he sends a reminder about the unpredictable nature of the division.
The Baggies secured a priceless victory in the survival chase with a 2-0 success at Preston on Saturday.
It means with three games left victory at home to Watford on Tuesday, coupled with Oxford dropping points elsewhere, would mathematically secure safety - but for the unknown of a potential points deduction as a result of an EFL charge for a financial breach.
Morrison is wary of getting carried away with the finish line in sight as his side went five points clear.
“It's massive really,” Morrison said.
“But I also know, in the back of my mind, that the Championship can throw surprises at you.
“It can keep testing you, and I won't forget that.”
Morrison added of a potential sanction hanging over his side: “I think this result will put it on the back-burner a little bit (from Albion’s perspective).
“But I've got no answers for that. We will Just continue to do our job really of trying to get results, and then we've done our job really, because at the end of the day we haven't got any control over it.”
There were joyous scenes at full-time in Lancashire as the Baggies celebrated with 4,000 travelling fans.
Strikers Josh Maja and Daryl Dike found the net, the latter with a wonderful moment and his first goal in almost 12 months.
“I didn't really have to say too much after the game,” Morrison added. “I think I was full of emotions, an emotional high after kicking every ball.
“I just said to put the music on lads, enjoy it. We picked it up again on Sunday as we recovered and went through the game, what we did well and what we can do better because we keep trying to improve.”
