James Morrison hailed a “magical” day in Preston as professional Albion responded to a week of off-field doubt with a critical 2-0 win in Lancashire.

Strikers Josh Maja and Daryl Dike netted early on and in the closing stages to seal a fine victory and help begin to banish concerns raised this week by a financial charge from the EFL.

Results earlier in the weekend, as Blackburn drew and Oxford and Leicester fell to defeat, helped clear the picture for the Baggies - for whom the victory at Deepdale opened up a five-point gap to the relegation places.

Four thousands travelling Albion fans sang themselves hoarse on a day to remember on the road as the relegation-battling Baggies went eight unbeaten.

“It was magical, really,” Morrison said.

“The performance we gave there was a typical away performance with a clean sheet and two goals from our strikers.

“I didn’t feel the players played with any pressure today so I’m really pleased for them, for the hard work they’ve been giving us.

“And then the scenes we saw at the end make it a good afternoon’s work.”

The Baggies made it three wins and five draws in nine under Morrison, who has transformed the club’s fortunes on the field.

There remains a question mark next to the bottom of the Championship after the week’s development that Albion face a hearing with the EFL after the charge of breaching profit and sustainability laws.

Morrison insisted on Friday he kept any external noise out of the training ground having banned talk of a possible sanction.

He said of responding with a fine performance and victory: “I think the players took it upon themselves, really, of ignoring that and concentrating on what we can concentrate on.

“Our job is to get results on the football pitch, and I think day-to-day our roles didn't change.

“It was just a bit of noise from the external really, and we went about our jobs really well today.”

The travelling fans exploded with Albion’s two goals and kept the decibel levels raised all afternoon.

There was no more popular goalscorer as Dike ended a run of almost 12 months without a goal with the second to seal it.

Emotion filled the away end and the players during the celebrations of the second and at the full-time whistle - where understated boss Morrison even got carried away with a triple fist-pump.

“They were great scenes at the end, that's what we worked for all week,” Morrison said.

“We had similar scenes at Bristol City, we talked about the two games coming up (Preston and Watford), what they can mean. It was the same when we had Hull and Bristol City, there was a big focus on three points today, that they will put us in good stead.”

He added: “I thought it was a top performance, the goals came at the right times in the game. The first one we started really well, got our rewards with a good bit of play and a great finish.

“Then we controlled the game without really being overstretched, and then when we had to defend the box we defended it really well.”
