West Brom caretakers: How James Morrison's record stacks up and who is the other interim to land full time job

There is a growing belief among West Brom fans that James Morrison will land the job on a permanent basis.

James Morrison’s third interim spell in charge of Albion has so far been his longest and his best.

Having taken the reigns last season for two games and once earlier in the campaign - Morrison was put in charge for the final eleven games, following Eric Ramsay’s departure.

After his disastrous start at Oxford - Albion are unbeaten in ten with Morrison picking up 18 points in that time.

It has been enough to guide them to complete their mission of surviving in the Championship.

Taking into account his spells in charge - Morrison has led Albion in 13 league matches, losing just once, and winning five times.

It is a pretty decent record and he has a strong case for the full time job.

But how does he stack up against some former interim West Brom bosses?

Brian Whitehouse became Albion’s first ever caretaker in the 70s, winning two of his three games having taken over from Don Howe.

Elsewhere, former defender John Wile won one game out of four after Ronnie Allen’s first spell in charge came to an end.

Arthur Mann took charge in 1997, on the back of Alan Buckley’s poor stint.

He had just three games, winning one, while the next interim was Richie Barker who ended with a 100 per cent win record. Granted he only had one game in charge.

John Trewick was next, but he lost both of his games in charge. Albion legend Cyrille Regis had two spells in caretaker charge in the 1990s, with John Gorman and then Allan Evans.

In the latter spell, they also had a 100 per cent record with one win.

Frank Burrows failed to win a game in his spell in the Premier League - having led the side after Gary Megson’s dismissal in 2004.

One of the better short spells was Nigel Pearson, who stepped in after Bryan Robson and he won three out of four games.

Elsewhere, the late Craig Shakespeare won his only game in charge.

Others to take over include Michael Appleton and then Keith Downing, who won just one of six games before Pepe Mel arrived.

Although his record could arguably be skewed, with multiple claims since that Downing and Dean Kiely were the ones in charge of the side amid Mel’s ill-fated spell.

The only interim spell to rival Morrison in terms of length is Jimmy Shan’s in 2019. After Darren Moore was sacked, Shan was tasked with leading Albion to the play-offs.

He won seven of his 12 games in charge, before they came up short in the play-offs against Aston Villa.

Since then, Richard Beale (one win) and Chris Brunt, one victory from six games, have kept the seat warm.

Morrison has now had three stabs at the interim role - and the only other person to be instilled as temporary manager more than once is Regis.

And if Morrison is to land the Baggies job on a full time basis, he will be only the third interim boss to ever go on and take the permanent position.

Brian Talbot won four out of form games as interim boss in the late 1980s, leading to him being appointed as Albion boss.

And after Moore was handed the interim job in 2018, he went on to take charge for the first season back in the Championship.
