'We don't have £10million to wallop down' - West Brom boss on deadline day pursuits

The Baggies were unable to complete a deal for another striker in the final day of the transfer window.

Albion boss James Morrison revealed the lack of a deadline day forward addition was “not for the want of trying” this week.

The Baggies tried to add a final centre-forward to the ranks prior to Tuesday’s deadline but were unable to strike a deal with any targets.

One, Southampton’s former Villa striker Cameron Archer, joined French side Auxerre on a heavy wage-loaded loan deal.

Albion’s sole deadline recruit, a 10th summer signing, was right-back Brayann Pereira, who was not signed in time to feature in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Charlton at The Hawthorns.

"It wasn't for the want of trying," Morrison said of the striker hunt. "Sometimes that's the way it goes. At the end of the day it's got to be for the best of the club and obviously be the right value.”

The head coach stressed the club do not have unlimited funds, or “ten million quid to wallop down”.

He added: "Yes (forward one lacks one) - but they are hard to come by, aren't they?

"We're not in that position to just wallop 10 million quid. Obviously we tried with some deals, but it just didn't work out, and that's life.

"That's down to me now, to find a way to break teams down and score.”

Pereira, the £1m addition from NEC Nijmegen in Holland, is competition for fellow French arrival Nolan Galves.

Morrison said: "Obviously Nolan has come and he's going to need help.

“You can see he's got qualities going forward but lacks in that defensive area. Again, we'll just knit it together. There's a good player there.”

Another area Albion were unable to complete deals were loan moves out for promising youngsters on deadline day.

The club were keen to send right-back Alex Williams, who has impressed and shone at Newcastle last week, winger Ollie Bostock and midfielder Cole Deeming away on loan.

But interest was not forthcoming in the trio, who have to stay put for now - unless they head to National League clubs, as the fifth tier and below can operate outside of the regular transfer window.

Morrison believes the academy graduates should go on loan to the National League. He said: "There were just no takers, really. Again, it wasn't for the want of trying.

"When they're here we'll work with them. They've got to continue their work and get in my plans.

"Yes (frustrating for them) - because it's their development and then it's just up to them with what they want to do.

"I believe it will be good for them to go down and get some men's football."
