James Morrison reveals West Brom half-time message, defensive frustration and two striker quandary

Albion’s boss was left frustrated after his team were held by a stubborn and defensive Charlton outfit.

James Morrison was left frustrated at the manner of Charlton’s equaliser to snatch a point at The Hawthorns.

It appeared Albion’s patience had been rewarded as Callum Styles smashed in a rocket from the edge of the box on the hour.

But Nathan Jones’ early-season high-flyers hit back with their only shot on goal through Tyreece Campbell 10 minutes later and the hosts could not fashion a winner.

The head coach was irritated that his side allowed the Addicks to strike back.

He said: "I'm frustrated we didn't win the game, but I felt we were really good. In the first half we just lacked the last bit.

"At half-time I said we'd got them where we wanted them, we're tiring them out, and to just kick them up a level in the second half.

"We did that but they got one opportunity in the second half to get into the box and it ends up in our goal.

"When we're dominant with the ball, and they're not getting a kick, we need to not let them get in our box, or defend our box, or stop the cross.

"In a short period of time we've come a long way, especially with a lot of new signings trying to find their feet. That's the positive.”

Morrison handed a first start and home debut to Kareem Tunde, who did well in spells, before his half-time replacement Rabby Nzingoula shone with another bright display.

Charlton had just 40 per cent of possession and were happy to sit in a deep defensive block for large spells, until Albion found a way through.

Morrison added: "They are good at what they do, they've proven it to start the season by picking up results and they've found a way to do that.

"We just have to be better around the box and get the best opportunity and that will come.

"It was a great goal. He's been knocking on the door for a while with that.

"But we need to be better with our set-plays. It's not quite there at the moment. It was good for Stylesy, I thought his performance was top."

Morrison’s inclusion of Tunde for Harry Whitwell was a single change from the defeat at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Striker Aune Heggebo remained a substitute as he continues a recovery from a nasty bout of illness felt during his controversial two-match suspension.

Morrison confirmed the Norwegian striker is still struggling to train in full and that was behind his call to continue with Jimmy-Jay Morgan, who was well shackled with Felix Horn Myhre once again quiet in support.

Albion missed out in the hunt for a striker on Tuesday’s deadline day. The club tried for forward additions, but options including long-term target Cameron Archer of Southampton - who went on loan to France outfit Auxerre for big wages in which the Baggies could not compete.

"I just think Bo's been struggling with the illness, he hasn't got over it yet,” Morrison added. "I can see the way he's training, he looks like he's being 'dug up'. I need to give him a few more days to get back to normal.”
