Statham, Fellows and Rodriguez: West Brom and Southampton 'played for both' XI
We take a look at some of the biggest names to have represented both West Brom and Southampton
Ahead of West Brom's clash with Southampton, the Express & Star has picked a starting 11 of players who have represented both clubs over the years.
From a Baggies legend who spent almost two decades at The Hawthorns to Premier League goal scorers and young talents who swapped the Black Country for the south coast, here is our ‘Played For Both XI’ for Albion and Southampton.
Goalkeeper: Jack Rose
West Brom: 2013–2017 (0 league appearances), Southampton: 2017–2020 (0 league appearances)
Starting between the sticks is goalkeeper Jack Rose, who came through Albion's academy before moving to Southampton in 2017.
The Solihull-born shot-stopper signed his first professional contract with the Baggies in 2013, but struggled to break into the senior side and was sent out on loan to Accrington Stanley and Crawley Town to gain first-team experience.
After leaving The Hawthorns, Rose joined Southampton following a successful trial, although he was again unable to make a competitive first-team appearance. He subsequently moved to Walsall, where he enjoyed a more regular taste of senior football.

Defender: Derek Statham
West Brom: 1976–1987 (299 league appearances), Southampton: 1987–1989 (64 league appearances)
One of the most recognisable names in this starting 11, Derek Statham was a hugely popular figure at The Hawthorns during one of the most exciting periods in Albion's history.
The Wolverhampton-born left-back made his debut as a teenager in 1976 and became an important member of Ron Atkinson's entertaining side, playing alongside the likes of Bryan Robson, Cyrille Regis and Laurie Cunningham. His performances also earned him three senior England caps.
Statham left Albion for Southampton in 1987, where he quickly established himself under Chris Nicholl. He was named the Saints' Player of the Season in 1987/88 before injuries disrupted his second campaign on the south coast.

Defender: Mason Holgate
West Brom: 2019 and 2024–2025 (45 league appearances), Southampton: 2023–2024 (5 league appearances)
A familiar face to Albion supporters from two separate loan spells, Mason Holgate initially arrived at The Hawthorns from Everton in January 2019.
The versatile defender became an important part of Darren Moore's side as the Baggies pushed for an immediate return to the Premier League, operating at right-back and providing an attacking threat from defence. He returned to Everton at the end of the campaign after Albion suffered play-off heartbreak against Aston Villa.
Holgate subsequently joined Southampton on loan in 2023, but made just five Premier League appearances before his spell was cut short. He returned to Albion for the 2024/25 season, making a further 26 Championship appearances as the Baggies again challenged for a play-off place.

Defender: Charlie Taylor
West Brom: 2025–2026 (26 league appearances), Southampton: 2024–2026 (8 league appearances)
An experienced left-back with plenty of Premier League pedigree, Charlie Taylor joined Albion on loan from Southampton in September 2025.
The former Leeds United youngster had spent seven years at Burnley, where he established himself in the top flight and helped Vincent Kompany's side win the Championship title in 2023.
Taylor joined Southampton on a free transfer in 2024, but found opportunities limited as the Saints endured a difficult Premier League campaign. His move to Albion offered the chance for more regular football, and he made 26 Championship appearances during his season-long loan before moving to Derby County in the summer of 2026.

Defender: Stuart Williams
West Brom: 1950–1962 (226 league appearances), Southampton: 1962–1966 (150 league appearances)
Welsh international Stuart Williams enjoyed a lengthy association with Albion during one of the most successful periods in the club's history.
The full-back arrived at The Hawthorns from Wrexham in 1950 and spent 12 years with the Baggies, competing for a place in a side that won the FA Cup in 1954 and regularly challenged near the top of the First Division.
Williams also represented Wales at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden and earned 43 international caps during his career. He left Albion for Southampton in 1962, making 150 league appearances over four seasons before retiring from professional football in 1966.
Midfielder: Tom Fellows
West Brom: 2021–2025 (87 league appearances), Southampton: 2025–present
One of the most recent players to represent both clubs, Tom Fellows emerged as one of the Championship's brightest young talents during his time at The Hawthorns.
The Solihull-born winger joined Albion's academy at the age of nine and made his senior debut against Arsenal in the League Cup in 2021. After gaining experience on loan at Crawley Town, Fellows became a regular under Carlos Corberan and was a key part of the side that reached the Championship play-offs in 2024.
He enjoyed another impressive campaign in 2024/25, registering 14 league assists before Southampton signed him in August 2025 for an initial £8m. The move came just over a year after Fellows had featured in Albion's play-off semi-final defeat to the Saints.

Midfielder: Richard Chaplow
West Brom: 2005–2008 (44 league appearances), Southampton: 2006 and 2010–2013 (72 league appearances)
A hard-working midfielder who enjoyed contrasting fortunes at the two clubs, Richard Chaplow joined Albion from Burnley in January 2005 for a reported £1.5m fee.
The former England under-21 international was brought in to strengthen Bryan Robson's squad during their battle against relegation from the Premier League, but struggled to establish himself as a regular at The Hawthorns. He spent time on loan at Southampton before eventually leaving Albion for Preston North End in 2008.
Chaplow returned to Southampton in 2010 and became part of Nigel Adkins' promotion-winning side, helping the Saints climb from League One to the Championship before securing a second successive promotion to the Premier League in 2012.

Midfielder: Carlton Palmer
West Brom: 1984–1989 (121 league appearances), Southampton: 1997–1999 (45 league appearances)
A product of Albion's youth system, Carlton Palmer began his professional career at The Hawthorns before going on to represent England at the highest level.
The Rowley Regis-born midfielder made his senior breakthrough in 1985 and became a regular during a difficult period for the Baggies, which included relegation from the First Division in 1986. His combative performances eventually earned him a move to Sheffield Wednesday in 1989.
Palmer went on to establish himself in the Premier League with Wednesday and Leeds United, earning 18 England caps under Graham Taylor. He joined Southampton in 1997 for a reported £1m fee, spending 18 months at The Dell before leaving for Nottingham Forest in January 1999.

Forward: Jay Rodriguez
West Brom: 2017–2019 (82 appearances), Southampton: 2012–2017 (104 appearances)
A player who enjoyed two successful seasons at The Hawthorns, Jay Rodriguez joined Albion from Southampton in July 2017 for a fee of around £12m.
The former Burnley striker arrived with Premier League experience and quickly established himself as an important part of the Baggies' attack, although he could not prevent their relegation in 2018. Rodriguez remained at Albion for the following Championship campaign, scoring 22 league goals as they reached the play-offs under James Shan.
He had previously spent five years at Southampton, scoring 15 Premier League goals during the 2013/14 season before suffering a serious knee injury. Rodriguez eventually left Albion to return to boyhood club Burnley in 2019.

Forward: Shane Long
West Brom: 2011–2014 (81 appearances), Southampton: 2014–2022 (198 appearances)
Republic of Ireland international Shane Long was a popular figure at The Hawthorns during Albion's successful spell in the Premier League under Roy Hodgson and Steve Clarke.
The striker joined the Baggies from Reading in August 2011 and made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut against Manchester United. His tireless running and ability to stretch defences made him a valuable member of the side, and he scored 19 Premier League goals during his time at the club.
Long left Albion for Hull City in January 2014 before joining Southampton just seven months later. He spent eight years at St Mary's, becoming a regular under several managers and famously scoring the fastest goal in Premier League history after just 7.69 seconds against Watford in 2019.

Forward: Rickie Lambert
West Brom: 2015–2016 (20 Premier League appearances), Southampton: 2009–2014 (207 appearances)
Completing the starting 11 is former England international Rickie Lambert, who joined Albion towards the end of his career after establishing himself as one of Southampton's greatest modern goal scorers.
The powerful striker arrived at The Hawthorns from Liverpool in July 2015 for a reported £3m fee, but struggled to make an impact under Tony Pulis. Lambert managed just one Premier League goal for the Baggies before leaving for Cardiff City the following summer.
His spell at Southampton had been considerably more successful, with Lambert helping the Saints secure successive promotions from League One to the Premier League under Nigel Adkins.
He continued his prolific form in the top flight, earning an England call-up in 2013 and later securing a dream move to boyhood club Liverpool.
