'Bits I liked, bits I didn't' - Honest James Morrison verdict on West Brom's 4-1 win

It was a winning finale to what has been a very productive trip on the continent for the Baggies.

Boss James Morrison admitted he had some mixed emotions despite his side running out convincing 4-1 winners to sign off in Portugal.

All four of the strikers Albion brought out to the Algarve found the net as League One new boys Bromley were swept aside comfortably in front of delighted travelling supporters.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan, Aune Heggebo, Jack Bray and Barney Stewart found the net in Albufeira to make it two wins from two in pre-season.

It is home time on Saturday for Albion, who will return to work at their Walsall training base before a first UK public friendly at League Two Shrewsbury Town next Saturday.

“I was a little bit frustrated in the game,” Morrison told the Express & Star. “I've seen bits that I like, I've seen bits that I didn't.

“It's probably the stage we're at, that it's not always going to be perfect and probably the things that were wrong, we can fix, which is probably what you want in this stage of pre-season.

“So I think once I've chilled out a bit and watch the game back, I'll be happy. But I'm really happy with the week.

“I felt a good energy around the place. The players took on information, what we're putting into them, and the effort was very pleasing.”

Asked what specifically he felt his team struggled with at times against Bromley, Morrison added: “A bit of quality on the ball.

“Recognising what the opposition are doing - and how we fix it.

“I mean, they were a man-marking team, and we had to just suck them on to play forward and run off them. I think you've seen bits when we were running forward with power, we got in behind them and created several chances.

“I thought, again, when we're attacking, we could have locked them in with their clearances, we could have recycled again. A few players turned the ball over too much.”

Exciting recruit Morgan curled in a fine finish high into the corner following a neat move to open the scoring before Bromley equalised from the penalty spot a few minutes later after an Alfie Gilchrist infringement from a corner.

Heggebo bundled his side back ahead on the stroke of half-time from the impressive Isaac Price’s cross.

A flurry of substitutes entered at the interval and again on the hour - with World Cup-style hydration breaks also taking place midway through both halves - but the Baggies did not rest on their laurels.

Bray, the 19-year-old frontman from the under-21s, and new signing Stewart got in on the act with neat late finishes.

Morrison was satisfied with the manner of the second period.

“I've played in these games, I know what it was like,” he said. “For instance at kick-off it was boiling hot - boiling. I was saying ‘God, good job I'm not playing in that!

“But I tried to say to the lads there are no excuses, we go after this game, get valuable minutes in the legs, and keep trying to keep the intensity going.

“And then the players who came on, some younger players, showed glimpses and we looked powerful going forward and in behind. Because we need to score more goals this year.”
