West Brom prospect seals second loan of season and first step up to Football League

Albion prospect Cole Deeming has sealed a second loan of the season as he makes his first steps in the aim to become a regular in the Football League.

Midfielder Deeming, who only turned 19 earlier this month, spent a successful first stint away from The Hawthorns earlier this season at National League strugglers Truro City.

It was a brief but successful month for Halesowen-born Deeming, a boyhood Baggies fan, in Cornwall. He made four league appearances and one in the FA Trophy but caught the eye for Truro and signed off for his loan with a crucial goal in a 1-1 draw away to high-flying Forest Green Rovers, who contained Deeming's fellow Albion midfield prospect Harry Whitwell.

And Deeming has now made the switch to League Two outfit Cheltenham Town for the remainder of the season in his second loan deal of the campaign.

The left-footed midfielder links up with the 18th-placed Robins, who are looking to climb away from the lower reaches of the fourth tier.

It is believed the aim was always to find Deeming a loan deal higher up the pyramid if possible after an initial taster as a regular in senior football.

Deeming could make his Cheltenham debut in Saturday's fourth tier clash at home to Grimsby Town.

The Gloucestershire outfit have taken a range of Albion prospects for loans in recent years, including some that have gone on to become first-team players at The Hawthorns or at Championship level, including Caleb Taylor, Josh Griffiths and Finn Azaz. Kemar Roofe is another.

Deeming made his senior Albion bow in August 2024 and was well thought of by Albion's previous management team having caught the eye during pre-season training over the summer.

Whitwell has since returned from his National League loan at Forest Green and appeared briefly for the Baggies in the FA Cup penalty success in Swansea. The 20-year-old is likely to go out on loan again, potentially into the Football League as he will be able to represent a third club this season, though Rovers retain an interest in bringing him back to the New Lawn.

That move for Whitwell could potentially rest on whether Albion are able to beef their midfield at senior level this month, with any possible loan movement likely to come towards the end of the window.
