Mikey Johnston named in team of the week - despite West Brom winger's half-time withdrawal

Albion winger Mikey Johnston was named in the Championship team of the week for his performance at Coventry - despite his half-time withdrawal.

Johnston had provided the ammunition to help the Baggies into a 2-0 lead at the CBS Arena via two Aune Heggebo goals.

League leaders Coventry pulled one back before the break before Albion head coach Ryan Mason opted to surprisingly withdraw Johnston at the break to introduce Samuel Iling-Junior.

It had been assumed Republic of Ireland international Johnston was feeling the effects of some rough treatment from the Sky Blues, but Mason confirmed afterwards the winger was not injured and the switch was a tactical one to try to cause the hosts more trouble.

Mason told the Express & Star: "No, he was OK. I just could feel the way the game was going to go.

"With him and Samuel it was 50-50 who started the game. Obviously Mikey contributed to the two goals and did extremely well.

"We just felt in the second half it would have been more beneficial having a left footer on that side of the pitch and we were planning on changing our shape a little bit to cause them more problems, to find a deep space a lot more because we knew we could attack that area and cause him problems."

Albion lost Jayson Molumby to a second yellow card moments after half-time and Coventry turned the contest around to win 3-2 - and Albion fans were left mystified at the call to withdraw Johnston when he had been a thorn in City's side.

Now the former Celtic winger has been recognised in the Championship's official team of the week - despite needing just 45 minutes to do so.

Johnston's pair of assists took his tally for the campaign to six, already one better off than his creative efforts for last term.

Johnston was Albion's sole representative in the team of the week, which also included last season's loan flop Adam Armstrong of Southampton.

Sheffield United were represented twice after the Steel City derby victory with Tyrese Campbell and Japhet Tanganga.

Rob Dickie and Anis Mehmeti of Bristol City were also included.
