The 35-year-old joined Albion this week on a free transfer after ending a three-year association with Major League Soccer by cancelling his deal with Minnesota United.

He was rushed into the team for the 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Mansfield Town and looked energetic at right wing-back despite suffering from jet lag.

Moore believes Mears, who he played with at Derby, will only improve further, and the full-back is keen to make an impression because his short-term contract only lasts until January.

“Considering Tyrone’s only been with us for a short time, and the way his fitness levels are, he can only get stronger,” said Moore.

“I was pleased to get him. Me and Tyrone were former teammates and I knew the character he was then, I know he prides himself on his physical condition.

“We saw that against Mansfield – to keep his energy levels as high as he did, is testament to Tyrone.

“He’ll add competition to Phillips, that’s what he’s here to do. He’s a very experienced full back, he knows the league inside out.

“He’s knows the tempo of the English game, and we’re really pleased to have him on board.”

It has been a whirlwind few days for Mears, who was halfway through a season with Minnesota when Moore came calling.

“It was great to get 90 minutes,” said the 35-year-old. “Obviously, I’m still getting over the jet-lag, but I’ve felt better each day I’ve been here, which is good.

“Knowing Darren has been very important to me coming here as I had to cancel my deal in America.

“This would have been my fourth season out there and I was enjoying it. It’s a league that’s definitely getting better.

“I’ve played with the gaffer before and I know what a wonderful job he has done up to now.

“I knew him as a player but also as a good man. He’s very trustworthy, honest, hardworking and that’s what he expects from his players.

“It’s a great opportunity to come here and fight for a place. We’ll see what happens.

“I’m here to push the guys in front of me. If I can get in the team and keep my spot then that’s great.

“I need to make the most of this move as it is short term and I’ve got to impress people.”
