The right-back has been a target for Premier League Brighton this summer but the Baggies have stolen a march on their rivals by tabling a £3million offer.

Boss Darren Moore has made signing a right-back his number one priority before the window closes at 5pm tomorrow.

The manager opted to deploy centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo in the role for Tuesday’s game at Nottingham Forest.

But he now wants to sign ex-Shrewsbury loanee Tavernier.

The 26-year-old penned a new three-and-a-half-year deal with Rangers back in February and is believed to be happy in Scotland.

But the Bradford-born full-back may find the lure of returning to England too strong.

If he joins, Tavernier could still play alongside Jay Rodriguez this season with it understood the forward is likely to remain at The Hawthorns.

Long-term suitors Burnley are unlikely to match his valuation before the transfer window closes tomorrow.

The 29-year-old is understood to be keen on a return to his home town club, where he made over 100 appearances between 2007 and 2012.

But with the Clarets in Turkey ahead of their Europa League qualifier with Istanbul Basaksehir on Thursday, a deal remains unlikely.

Tottenham have also ran the rule over Rodriguez this summer. But a move to London is also unlikely with Moore eager to keep the forward in his squad.

Albion are also confident of holding on to Craig Dawson.

Dawson handed in a written transfer request last month with Burnley also keen on the defender.

But there interest has now cooled following the signing of Ben Gibson from Middlesbrough.

Watford today made an audacious bid to sign the defender on loan for the 2018/19 campaign.

It’s is understood the offer was an initial year-long loan for a fee of £750,000.

The bid also included an option to buy Dawson for £10million by paying instalments of £2.5million over the next four years.

But that offer was rejected out of hand by Albion.

The Baggies are determined to keep hold of their key players as they plot an immediate return to the Premier League.

They are also reluctant to sell on deadline day as it leaves them short of time to find replacements.

But while Dawson and Rodriguez could now stay, Nacer Chadli could still depart the club this month.

The Belgian is believed to have interest from clubs in Europe – with the window abroad not closing until the end of the month.
