Liverpool 2 West Brom 3 - player ratings
Albion stunned Liverpool 3-2 at Anfield last night in an FA Cup fourth round match punctuated with VAR controversy. Here, we rate the players.
Ben Foster
Was sold short by Brunt and Evans for the first goal, but still saved from Salah, and there was nothing he could do about the second. Made a series of impressive saves in the second half to keep the Reds at bay. Strong hands denied James Milner, he smothered the ball at the feet of Danny Ings, and there was an impressive double save too. Forget the fact the second one was offside, Foster didn't know that. 8/10
Allan Nyom
Stood up well to Sadio Mane's threat, so much so, that the Senegalese speedster was taken off early in the second half. 7/10
Craig Dawson
Although he doesn't have a goal to his name, he put the ball in Liverpool's net three times in total. His two headers were chalked off for offside and his cross-come-shot was inadvertently turned in by Joel Matip. Didn't get much of a chance to stake a claim at centre-back thanks to an injury to Gibbs, but wherever he plays, he's a force. 8/10
Jonny Evans
Made a costly mistake for the first goal and also lost possession in his own half during the second period. But don't question his desire or will to win. He was fighting throughout and the win visibly meant a lot to him. Whatever happens in these final few days of the window, Evans has carried himself professionally over the past few weeks. 6/10
Kieran Gibbs
Found Rodriguez's run with his pull back for Albion's second goal but was forced off with a hamstring injury later in the first half. 6/10
Jake Livermore
Pushed out to the right wing in order to nullify the attacking threat of Alberto Moreno and he did well out there. It was his unnecessary tug on Mohamed Salah that was picked up by VAR for Liverpool's penalty, but on the whole he played well. 6/10
Grzegorz Krychowiak
Another supreme box-to-box performance from the in-form Pole who is now living up to his reputation. Krychowiak was everywhere, snapping at heels and driving Albion forward. He helped run the first half with Gareth Barry. 9/10
Gareth Barry
There's not much more to write about the Premier League's record appearance maker that hasn't been written before. Composed in possession and still a willing warrior in midfield, he knows when to draw the foul, and still has a surprising burst of pace for a man of his age. A midfield maestro. 8/10
Chris Brunt
His backpass led to Liverpool's opener but he atoned for that error immediately when he picked Rodriguez out for Albion's first. His bicycle-kick on the ground will live long in the memory, but this was a hungry performance from Albion's longest serving player. Still so reliable. 7/10
Hal Robson-Kanu
Started brightly before he was forced off with a hamstring injury. 6/10
Jay Rodriguez - Albion man of the match
Thundered an unstoppable rocket into Mignolet's top corner seven minutes in and four minutes later, swept home his second of the match and his fifth in his last six games. Rodriguez is on fire at the moment, and is proving why so many thought his signing was a shrewd on in the summer. But his performance was more than goals, he was also determined to do the necessary defensive work for the team. 9/10
Substitutes
Ahmed Hegazi (for Gibbs)
The Egyptian defender didn't start because he was ill, but if he was suffering, he didn't show it. Came on and helped shore up the backline. Considering Virgil Van Dijk cost £75m, it's astounding Hegazi was £4.5m. 7/10
Matt Phillips (for Robson-Kanu 38)
Played up front to offer Albion pace on the counter attack and took pressure off the Baggies with some close ball control and penetrating runs into Liverpool's half. A valuable impact. 7/10
Claudio Yacob (for Barry 70)
Brought on to see out the victory and even though Salah scored, Albion did that. 6/10
Unused: Myhill, Burke, McClean, Rondon.
