Only Derby County have gone longer without winning, when their disastrous 2007/08 campaign included a remarkable 32-game winless streak.

The Baggies have now surpassed the 19-game winless run Aston Villa went on when they went down two seasons ago.

They have equalled Sunderland’s 20-game winless run from the 2002/03 season that also ended in their relegation.

Should they fail to beat promoted side Brighton at home a week on Saturday, they will hold second place in their own right.

Sunderland also failed to win their first six games of their next Premier League campaign in 2005/06, meaning their winless run actually totalled 26 game across two seasons.

Norwich City have also gone 21 games without a win across two Premier League seasons.
