Saido Berahino in limbo after Diafra Sakho West Brom deal is ditched
Saido Berahino has been left in limbo at Albion after the club dramatically pulled the plug on their £16million record move for Diafra Sakho.
The West Ham striker had been set to join the Baggies in a club-record transfer only for the deal to be scrapped at the 11th hour.
Sakho had agreed terms and the move looked set to go through as late as yesterday morning as Albion awaited the final scan results from his medical, which took place late on Wednesday.
Club sources have been eager to stress the Senegal international did not fail the medical, though it is believed more general concerns about his fitness and readiness for the Premier League campaign were behind the decision to pull out of the deal.
The 26-year-old has scored 15 goals over the past two seasons for the Hammers but also suffered a number of injury setbacks, the latest being a back injury which has hampered his pre-season schedule.
With just over a week to go until the Premier League season begins, Albion are now left looking at other targets, while the collapse of the deal also has repercussions for Berahino.
The striker, who turned 23 yesterday, will not be granted his desired move away until the Baggies have brought in a replacement and his fate may now not be decided until late in the transfer window.
Stoke City had been favourites to land Berahino prior to yesterday's developments but may now look elsewhere.
with former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie another striker under consideration.
