Dutch international midfielder Tonny Vilhena on West Brom's radar
Albion have been running the rule over Dutch midfielder Tonny Vilhena.
Vilhena's contract at Feyenoord runs out this summer and the 21-year-old midfielder will be allowed to leave the Rotterdam side on a free transfer.
The Baggies have been keeping tabs on the Dutch youngster for a while and are believed to have watched him win his first cap for Holland at the weekend.
Inter Milan and Leicester have also previously shown an interest, and Vilhena left the door open to potential suitors after playing 11 minutes as a substitute in a 2-0 win over Austria.
"I have not made any decisions yet," he said, when asked about his future.
"I was with my national team in the last few days, so I had no time to face the issue."
Although the Baggies are keeping tabs on Vilhena, he is not believed to be at the top of their list.
Instead, they are pursuing other targets ahead of him as they ramp up their attempts to freshen up the midfield with young talent.
Nor was the Dutchman the only player Hammond was scouting in Austria, during an international friendly which Georginio Wijnaldum scored in.
Newcastle are hoping to keep hold of their midfielder, who finished top goalscorer last season after chairman Mike Ashley spent £14.5m on him last summer.
But he has already been linked with a move away from the North East to join countryman Ronald Koeman, who is expected to be confirmed as the new manager of Everton in the coming days.
Albion are in desperate need of a creative midfielder and Baggies head coach Tony Pulis prefers buying proven Premier League players.
Although the majority of club staff are currently on holiday, Hammond has been working hard behind the scenes to draw up a list of targets for when they return.
Pulis is also going to keep his eye out for potential additions when he goes to Euro 2016 next week as a pundit for ITV.
However, reports from Portugal suggesting Albion are interested in Benfica winger Ola John, who spent last season on loan at Championship side Reading, are understood to be wide of the mark.
The Royals had an option to buy the 24-year-old this summer but decided against it, and Albion are not keen either after an underwhelming campaign for Reading in which he scored just four goals.
