Chelsea: We got roughed up by the Baggies
Albion defender Jonny Evans says clashes on the pitch are 'just part of the game' after Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois criticised Albion for trying to 'provoke' teams into committing fouls.
Both teams were lucky to keep 11 men on the pitch in Wednesday's thrilling 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge, with Diego Costa and Claudio Yacob walking a tightrope with referee Anthony Dean.
Courtois, who also clashed with James McClean, was unhappy at Albion's in-your-face approach, saying: "I think he (Yacob) should have been sent off. Their manager took the player off one second after the foul so I think everybody knows that was clear.
"We're very disappointed. It was a game we wanted to win. It was a tough game with them playing only long balls, second balls, trying to provoke players."
Chelsea, however, were also guilty of surrounding the referee when Yacob stumbled into Costa in the second half and the striker apparently punched a hole in the tunnel wall after the final whistle.
But Evans shrugged off the reactions of Guus Hiddink's men.
"Football is an emotional game, they want to win as much as we do and sometimes things can get out of hand," he said.
"When you're on the pitch, you realise it's all a bit of game-play going on and there's nothing really in it. It's just part of the game when it's going on.
"Usually whenever the whistle goes and the game ends you shake hands and get on with it, it's all part of football. Fans like to see players being passionate."
Costa was his usual bullish self up front, picking fights with Jonas Olsson in the first half, but Evans didn't mind dealing with his antics.
"He's competitive, you don't mind that as a defender, as long as there's no nastiness involved," he said. "
Some lads need to do that for their own game to get themselves ready for the game, get themselves up for it and that seems to be his way. We've got a couple in our team ourselves."
