Callum McManaman was today set for an Albion medical after the club thrashed out a £4.75m deal with Wigan Athletic.

The 23-year-old winger was due for a series of tests after agreement was reached on the fee and personal terms last night, and the deal should be completed within the next 24 hours.

McManaman, who has scored 10 goals in 79 League games for the Latics, is expected to be unveiled as Tony Pulis' first signing and train with his new team-mates later this week.

But the Baggies appear to be set to miss out on other transfer targets, with Shola Ameobi set to go the same way as Darren Fletcher and join a rival Premier League club.

Crystal Palace are believed to have offered superior terms and, although the Baggies had agreed a contract in principle with the former Newcastle forward, either side has yet to activate the deal.

The 33-year-old is a free agent having ended his contract with Turkish side Gaziantep, after the club suffered financial problems.

Meanwhile, the agent of former Chelsea star Michael Essien claims he has rejected an offer from Albion to revive his Premier League career after falling out of favour at AC Milan.
