West Brom's Pepe Mel hopes to strike late deals
Albion boss Pepe Mel today confirmed he wants a striker in the January transfer window – and urged the club to consider more new faces before Friday's deadline.
Mel revealed misfit striker Markus Rosenberg is likely to leave this week, but out-of-favour midfielder Graham Dorrans could get another chance at The Hawthorns.
And he refused to rule out a loan move for Craig Dawson, but insisted the young defender has a big future with the Baggies.
The Baggies sold Shane Long to Hull this month and could lose Nicolas Anelka to a lengthy ban when an FA commission meets next month to rule on his quenelle goal celebration.
Sporting and technical director Richard Garlick had insisted Long would not be replaced, but the probable departure of Rosenberg could free up wages for a new forward.
Mel said: "Of course we need another striker.
"I'm very happy with the West Bromwich Albion squad. I think we have enough to compete and have a good season. But the club is working very hard to bring someone in.
"It really is likely Rosenberg will leave. He wants to be playing, having game-time elsewhere.
"There are clubs interested in him. As for Graham Dorrans, he is a player who could be very useful to us in the future and someone that we could use."
When Mel was appointed to replace Steve Clarke, Garlick played down the prospect of new faces, ruling out transfer fees and hinting that the size of the squad would be reduced.
But with a host of players approaching the end of their contracts, Mel is urging the Baggies to consider further reinforcements.
"The club needs to have vision for the future," he said. "We could have six or seven players leaving in the summer so West Bromwich Albion needs to be looking towards that future as well."
Meanwhile, Bolton still head the list of clubs chasing a loan deal for Dawson
"All of the clubs in the Championship want Craig Dawson," said Mel. "He's an exceptional centre-back, he's a young player and he has a big future for West Bromwich Albion. But the advantage of the system in England is that you can loan him out and he can have game-time."
