Steve Clarke: West Brom can be underdogs
Steve Clarke today challenged Albion to become giant-killers after they ended their wait for a Premier League victory with a massive win against Sunderland.
The Baggies claimed a 3-0 Hawthorns success against the Black Cats and now face two home games with Arsenal either side of a trip to Manchester United on Saturday.
"We can be dangerous underdogs," said Clarke, whose side take on the Gunners in the Capital One Cup third round on Wednesday.
"As a team the last two performances have been good. We rescued a point late on at Fulham but the second-half performance was good.
"Saturday's performance was solid with some good attacking play and some excellent moments and another clean sheet.
"We look forward to the games now.
"Old Trafford away is one no one expects us to get anything from but we will go there give our best and see what we can pick up."
The Baggies moved out of the Premier League's bottom three with a win that hastened the sacking of Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio.
The success followed two draws and two defeats from the opening four games of the league campaign, and Clarke is now keen to use it as a springboard for future wins. "The last week has made it a satisfactory start," said Clarke. "You can never be satisfied without a win after four games.
"The opening two league performances were poor and I haven't hidden from that fact. I like to think I am an honest person and I have an honest group of players.
"We know it was poor but Saturday was much better."
Clarke saw several of his late-summer signings make an impact on Saturday with Morgan Amalfitano named man of the match and Stephane Sessegnon netting a debut goal against the club who sold him to the Baggies on deadline day.
Clarke said: "I said in August I needed some more forwards to increase options. It also creates more problems for the opposition, the more good attacking players you have the more problems you are likely to cause them."
"It takes time if you sign players and try to change things around.
"One or two other teams in the league have made some changes like Norwich, ourselves and Sunderland.
"Sometimes it takes a little bit of time to pick up the rhythm and get moving.
"This is a step in the right direction but nothing more than that."
