"Knocking on the door" - Walsall midfielder Jamie Jellis backed to end goal drought

Mat Sadler believes Walsall midfielder Jamie Jellis is "knocking at the door" in his quest to end his 13-month goal drought.

The 25-year-old last found the net during the Saddlers' 2-0 win at Morecambe in February last year and has endured a stop-start campaign during his second full season in the Football League.

Jellis has worked his way back into the team in recent weeks and has started successive games against Shrewsbury Town and Fleetwood Town respectively.

He came agonisingly close to ending his dry spell when his close-range finish was smothered on the goal-line in a 1-0 defeat against the latter on Tuesday.

'One of our main men' - Sadler on Jellis

"I thought he was class tonight, brilliant on Saturday [against Shrewsbury] and he's one of our main men," boss Sadler said.

"We look to rely on him because he's one of the big guys in this team and he takes that responsibility on his shoulders.

"He showed that with some of his driving runs and energy. I don't know how that ball didn't go in when he had that chance on the line, but he's knocking on the door.

"Yes [a goal would be huge for him] but his performances are very good."

'Still fighting' - Sadler on Walsall promotion push

Walsall sit just three points outside of the play-off places ahead of a run of four fixtures against the current top seven in the space of 10 days.

A third successive home defeat extended their winless run at Bescot to six games, but Sadler is determined to stay in the fight during the business end of the season.

"We're frustrated that we've not picked up those points to get us right back in those play-off places, or just outside of it as it might have been," he added.

"But we're still in there fighting. There are a group of guys that are desperate to do well for each other and to make sure that we make something of this season.

"We just have to keep believing and fighting."
