'It drives you more' - Jamille Matt on his quest for redemption at Walsall

Walsall captain Jamille Matt says the experience of last season has increased his "drive" to achieve success with the club.

The 36-year-old scored 12 times for the Saddlers last term, as they infamously blew a 12-point lead at the League Two summit to miss out on promotion.

A 1-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon in the League Two play-off final added salt into the gaping wounds, but Walsall have recovered well to propel themselves into another promotion race this term.

And while Matt has no intentions of dwelling on the past, he does feel that lessons can be learned from those that were there to experience it.

'It will drive you more' - Matt on lessons learned at Walsall

"I don't think you touch on it, you learn from it," Matt said.

"You've been there before and it will drive you more. What have you learned from those experiences? And how can you implement the lessons learned from it?

"There are a lot of players from the group last year, but there are new players too.

"We're a different group and a better group moving forward, so let's keep moving forward."

Aden Flint has worn the armband whenever Matt has been absent and has been a vital addition to the leadership pack within the squad.

Albert Adomah, Brandon Comley, Priestley Farquharson and Sam Hornby are also key senior figures in the dressing room.

Matt: We need to maintain our standards

Matt suggested there are many more taking a leading role behind the scenes and that those personalities will continue to help maintain the standards during the sharp end of the campaign.

"I can think load loads of people who can be included in that [list of dressing room leaders]," he added.

"We all want the same thing. It takes a team and the group of men that you just mentioned to keep us doing that.

"If we stick to the standards we've set then not many teams will live with us in this league.

"That word gets mentioned a lot because that's all we can do is set our standards.

"We've got a target, in terms of, teams know what we're good at and they've got to try and live with that.

"Teams have to raise their game to beat for that reason."
