Aaron Pressley reveals 'starting from zero' approach behind Walsall hot streak

The Scotsman has already surpassed his goal tally from last season for Walsall.

Walsall top scorer Aaron Pressley has revealed how a “starting from zero” approach has helped him maintain his prolific start to the season.

Pressley bagged a brace during the Saddlers’ 3-0 victory over Oldham Athletic on Tuesday to extend his season tally to eight goals in all competitions.

In doing so, Pressley surpassed his tally of seven from the previous campaign and needs just one more to exceed his highest ever total in a single season.

Pressley on his ‘starting from zero’ mentality

“In my head I’m back to zero now. I feel in a good place, but I know that football can change quickly,” Pressley explained.

“I relate it to different jobs. You sometimes need a bit of experience to develop that ability to work your way through.

“But I do feel in a good place and I feel like I’m in a team that is working very well.

“The team benefits me a lot. Of course, I’m scoring, but the team is performing in such a way to allow me to.”

Pressley has propelled himself into the role of talisman, after often playing in the shadow of last season’s leading goal scorer Daniel Kanu during his debut campaign.

One of the main traits that has characterised this Walsall team in the early stages of the Lee Grant era has been the work ethic and fitness levels throughout the group.

Scotsman Pressley also looks as fit as ever and feels that that hard work lays the foundations for his improved form in front of goal.

He continued: “It’s just about continuing to work hard. I write a few things down before each game and one of them is just to try and run as much as I can really.

“That gives you the potential to score a goal. It’s been a good start, but we need to continue.”
