A long time coming - Walsall interim Darren Byfield reflects on coaching journey
Walsall interim head coach Darren Byfield sported the widest of grins when he stood in the Bescot dugout on Tuesday evening.
He lived every moment, kicked every ball and endeared himself to the hierarchy to convince them to entrust him with the final eight games of the campaign.
For Byfield, this opportunity has been years in the making - stemming all the way back to his very first stint as player-manager at Redditch United in 2017 and on to his spells across non-league with the likes of Stratford Town, Walsall Wood and Alvechurch.
'I'm proud' - Byfield on his coaching journey so far
Reflecting nine years on, Byfield is proud of his coaching journey so far, and to be the man in the dugout leading "his club".
"100 per cent [it has been a long time coming] - I think that's why people just see me speak through emotion because you work hard every day," Byfield said.

"Not just in my profession but also yourselves. You probably look back two or three years ago, or five years ago, compared to where you are now.
