In December 1998, Siggi Eyjolfsson had been on trial at Walsall for a fortnight when senior duo Neil Pointon and Adi Viveash approached him.

In his mind, he was living the dream and was on the cusp of receiving his golden ticket to a career in English football. 

But Pointon and Viveash had been around the block and urged the Icelandic attacker to offer legendary boss Ray Graydon and director of football Paul Taylor an ultimatum. 

"Adi and Neil both spoke to me. They said, 'listen Siggi, you're good enough to be here, we can see that in training'," Eyjolfsson recalled. 

"Walsall are going to ask you to stay another week because they want you as back-up. When they do that, just say no and tell them that you're going home.

"Make them make a yes or no decision. I trusted them because they were experienced players, even though I really wanted to stay.

"At the end of that week, Paul Taylor and Ray Graydon asked me to stay another week, and I told them no, that is enough now.
