The match had been placed in doubt when a 2.30pm inspection was announced. The sodden surface at Blundell Park turned into a mudbath during the Mariners’ 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Wolves on Sunday.

However, despite further persistent rain in Lincolnshire, the pitch was deemed playable and the game will proceed as scheduled.

A statement by Grimsby Town read: "Following this afternoon’s precautionary pitch inspection, we are pleased to confirm that tonight’s fixture at Blundell Park is set to go ahead as planned.

"The playing surface has been thoroughly assessed and while some further cosmetic work is to be undertaken in the next few hours, it meets the required standards.

"We would like to thank the grounds team for their work during a challenging period of adverse weather, helping to ensure football can take place at Blundell Park this evening."

Walsall head into the fixture aiming to halt a five-match winless run that has seen them slip to ninth in the table and increased the pressure on boss Mat Sadler.

A statement from Walsall addded: "Today's fixture against the Mariners will go ahead as planned following this afternoon's precautionary pitch inspection.

"A massive credit to the team at Grimsby Town for all of their efforts!"
