The Wales under-21s international joined the Saddlers on loan in the summer after a successful trial during pre-season.

Cox started in a 2-1 win at Barnet and a 1-0 home defeat against Grimsby Town in August, but has been kept out of the team by Evan Weir ever since.

His only other league start came in a 1-0 victory at Oldham Athletic on December 10.

He also featured three times in the EFL Trophy and once in the League Cup, making seven appearances in total.

'Club working heard to strengthen the squad'

A club statement read: "The young defender has more than played his part when required for Mat Sadler's side, displaying athleticism and positive displays in the defence.

"We would like to place on record our thanks to Daniel for his professionalism and effort and wish him the best for the future.

"With the January transfer window open, the club are working hard to strengthen the squad."

The 19-year-old becomes the second Walsall loan player in the space of 24 hours to be recalled, after midfielder Ryan Finnigan returned to parent club Blackpool

Finnigan notched four goals and three assists in 26 appearances in all competitions for the club.
