Daniel Kanu delivered the match-winner midway into the first half when he capitalised on an Oldham error to extend his season tally to 10 goals.

That clinched a sixth successive away win for Walsall in all competitions and helped them create daylight between themselves and the trailing pack at the top of League Two.

Saddlers stretch lead at the summit

Defeats for Swindon Town and MK Dons 24 hours earlier presented Walsall with a prime opportunity to strengthen their grip on top spot.

They duly obliged to move four points clear at the League Two summit after registering a third league win on the spin.

Away success

Walsall have collected 20 points from 10 games on the road in League Two this term - the best away record in the division.

They have also registered three successive away league wins and have reeled off a remarkable run of six away victories on the spin in all competitions.

A big night in the long run
