Walsall defender Priestley Farquharson emerged through a sea of bodies to plant his downward header underneath Harrogate goalkeeper James Belshaw.

He absorbed every single emotion: puffing out his chest and stretching out his arms in front of 602 ecstatic Saddlers supporters in the away end.

It was a goal that helped power Walsall back to the top of League Two, but it was a hugely significant moment for Farquharson himself.

The 28-year-old was making his first league start in over 15 months - since the date when he hobbled off with a season-ending thigh injury in a 1-0 defeat at Tranmere Rovers on August 24, 2024.

Six months ago, many sensed that the writing was on the wall. His contract was ticking into its final weeks and his Walsall career comprised of just 24 appearances across all competitions in two seasons.

So it came as somewhat of a surprise when Farquharson was handed a new one-year deal in the summer.
