The 56-year-old left Bescot after just two weeks to become assistant manager under former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere following his appointment as Luton Town manager on Monday.

Powell was appointed as a temporary replacement for Gary Waddock, who has had to step aside from his duties for a "number of months" after undergoing ankle surgery.

"I would also like to send my best wishes to everyone at Walsall," Powell posted on X.

"My stay was only ever intended to be short, but in those couple of weeks, I witnessed a club striving to reach the next level.

"With an excellent young manager and a very capable staff and squad of players, I wish them nothing but success ahead.

"I'll follow their results with interest."

There has been no update on whether Walsall will seek a replacement for Powell following his exit.
