Walsall analysis: Saddlers showing the mettle for another League Two push

Some Walsall fans may be forgiven for thinking 'oh no, here we go again'.

The Saddlers got used to the perch at the top of League Two last season before the campaign ended in tears.

Barely a month-and-a-half into the new season and Mat Sadler has guided a totally new-look Walsall to the top of the pile again.

Walsall, and Sadler, know more than most that it is come the business end, when things are made mathematically sure, that matters.

Indeed without wanting to rip plasters off healing wounds, nothing was decided even by the closing seconds of game number 46 at Crewe in May.

It will not be lost on Saddlers fans either that the only previous time they have cheered an away win in Accrington was in October 2006, the first ever meeting between the two clubs, as Richard Money's men began their assault on what would bring the League Two title.

For now, anyway, most Walsall supporters can and will bask in enjoying their position at the top of the League Two standings until next weekend, at least.

Doing so in late September is an earlier ascent to the summit than last season's effort of early December.

Needless to say - as head coach Sadler was keen to stress after watching his side seal a professional 3-1 win - the 10-game stage is no stage to get excited. It means next to nothing, but Walsall are at least in a good place and appear to be heading in the right direction.
