The 26-year-old striker has been out for several weeks but is believed to be on course to return next month, as originally projected.

Clarke, whose Saddlers side host Southend today, said on Gordon: “He saw a consultant on Monday, and we got the good news that it’s healing well. That was very promising.

“We all know Josh is chomping at the bit to get himself back out on the grass – he’s actually doing my head in!

“He gets frustrated but he’s a great kid, and we look forward to welcoming him back to the group when he’s fit and well.”

Clarke, also hoping to have James Clarke and George Nurse back ‘very soon’, added: “He’s not going to be available straight away, but the injury is healing properly. If all goes to plan, we’re potentially looking at early December, which would be good news.

“He gets his brace off after the Cheltenham game (next weekend).”
