Walsall sign ex-Newcastle man Danny Guthrie
Walsall have made their second signing of the day – and their tenth of the summer – by snapping up former Newcastle midfielder Danny Guthrie.
The 32-year-old, who has made over 100 appearances in the Premier League, featured for the Saddlers as a trialist in the friendly at Leamington on Tuesday.
As well playing for Newcastle, Guthrie has also turned out for Reading, Fulham and Blackburn Rovers as well as Indonesian side Mitra Kukar.
“I’m delighted to be with the club,” Guthrie said.
“I have been here just over a week now training with the lads and I played on Tuesday night (against Leamington).
“They are a great set of lads and the coaching staff are great as well. There is great energy in the group and hopefully I can bring a bit of experience and composure.
“The gaffer is looking to bring a good mix of youth and experience into the squad so that we can give it a really good push this season.
“No team goes through a season without a sticky patch and that is why we need a few experienced lads who have been there and done it before.
“It’s all about getting the right mix in the squad. You need a bit of everything and hopefully I can help with my experience.”
Manager Darrell Clarke added: “Danny’s career speaks for itself. He’s been with us the last week or so and I’ve been really pleased with him.
“He adds that experience and you need a good balance in League Two of plenty of energy and a bit of know-how.
“He’s someone the younger players in the dressing room will look up to and he can help them progress.”
